Default Yamaha vs Johnson 225hp 4-stroke

I'm buying a new boat and the dealer has offered me a $6000 savings if I select Johnson(Suzuki)225hp 4-strokes vs. Yamahas. He is a long-term Johnson dealer but is not a Yamaha certified dealer.

The Johnsons are new this year so haven't a track record. The Yamaha 225's seem to be the engine of choice for most new boat manufacturers and have been around for several years.

Which one would you choose and why? I need to decide by April 15.

Thanks.

what about the warranties? Yamahas will probably be better on resale, but not 6,000 better.

I couldn't imagine that there would be $6,000 worth of difference between these two engines. Suzuki's are proven engines although the Johnson/Suzuki 225 is new, I would feel more than comfortable going with the Johnson's and pocketing the extra $$$.

How long is the warranty on these engines?

Eds Marine Superstore list the Yamaha for $13,499 and the Johnson for $12,499. You can probabally get the Suzuki for less than a Johnson and they have a 5 year warranty.

Definantly inquire about the warranties, and I would go with the warranty that has the longest coverage.* I'm pretty sure Yamaha offers a 2 year warranty.*

When Suzuki came out with the DF115/140 they had already conducted thousands of hours of testing prior to releasing the new motors. They seem to have performed quite well. I see no reason to be afraid of the DF200/225/250. Several people are upgrading from the DF140's to the new Suzuki V6 4 Strokes, if they werent happy with the 140's I don't think they would be shelling out the money for new Suzuki's.

If you would rather have the Yamaha's then just buy them.

Do a search on here on these motors there's plenty to read.

Good Luck

Don

What's the boat? The suzuki 225 appears to be the hot motor these days. Dont know anything about the Johnson. If he sells Johnson why not consider Ficht. These are great motors also. Do you have to get a 4 stroke?

Yamaha 4 strokes come with a 3 year warranty, and they sometimes have incentives that provide you upto 5 years of coverage. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice! Looks like right now Yamaha is ony offering cash rebates, but only upto the F115 in the 4 strokes and on the 225 thru 300HPDI's, the Yamaha extended warranty incentive ended March 31st.

The choice seems obvious to me.
$6000 is a heck of a savings.

Thanks to you and the others for great comments. The price difference is now down to $3000. I'm going for the Yamahas as I think their resale value will be better where I boat, should I need to change boats in a year or two.

Kevin, you replied to an earlier question of mine re: Pursuit 3070 Offshore Express. Even with the new cabin layout which I saw at the factory, the cabin is just too tight. Right now, the Wellcraft 290 Coastal is at the top of the list (not easy for a 10-year Tiara owner) pending one last look at the Stamas 29 Express. Wellcraft's layout and overall design is much better even though the quality is somewhat less. The Pursuit "mid-cabin" just doesn't work. The stairs interfere with access and the rod storage compartment chews up too much headroom. And the price is way too high for what you get.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Thats a big boat for the 225 4 strokes. I would suggest 250 hpdis. Theres nothing harder than trying to sell an underpowered boat.

ccm - perhaps it's 2 engines??* Don keeps referencing the plural in his post..???* You are right, best to get as much power as possible, especially in a "big" boat like that.

You're right about it being twin 225's. I was behind a 290 Coastal 2 weeks ago in a faster boat in Florida and he was cruising at 32 knots on my gps. Pulled alongside and he said he could reach the high 40's at WOT.

The boat I'd order won't have A/C or a generator...might help the speed a bit.

My goal is to cruise comfortably and quietly at 30 knots.

The Johnson 225's will be 3-4 mph faster than the Yamahas 3-4000 cheaper and has a 5 year nondeclining warranty thru April 15th.

The Yamaha F225 is a wonderful engine, but a bit short of a real 225hp. The Suzuki/Johnson seems to be a ball of fire from bottom end through the top end and is respectable in the weight comparison. It's a new engine, but the rest of the Sukison four strokes have proven to be fine without exception. Either one sounds like a good choice to me.

the 225 yamaha while a good steady engine is more than a little short in the true hp dept. the 225 suzuki's are a well tested engine with a better warranty, better performance,& better price.i do not think you resale will be hurt any if at all as the 4 stroke suzikis have a very good rep. & that rep. should continue to build.i do own 4 yamaha's so i am not trying to bash them ..i just think the 225 suzuki is a little better engine at this time. good luck
