Default Easy Boaters Safety Class

Hi: I have recently purchased a used Edgewater 185, which will be my first real "adult" boat (had a 13 foot whaler as a kid). I will using it with family for recreation/fishing in and around Cape Cod Bay.

Because I will be taking family and especially children with me from time to time, I figured it was time to take a boaters safety class, and I wanted to share what I have found in case it is useful or interesting to someone else.

I had first considered taking a Coast Guard class that is offerred locally, and visited the Coast Guard web site for schedules. On the web site I came across a class that can be purchased online. The class is a combination CD-Rom and online tutorials. For me, this is a great advantage over having to travel to/from a scheduled class and risk missing a class due to work/family demands. The class is entitled "America's Boating Class", and cost me about 40 bucks. It is approved and sponsered in part by the Coast Guard and looks like it covers many if not most of the basics for beginning boaters. I have not yet received it, so cannot give a review, but will post again after taking the class.

Here is the link for anyone interested:

One last word for anyone who has not taken a class or seriously considered safety---last summer I was hauled in from Cape Cod Bay by a passing boater after falling unconsious from my Kayak. Details are not important, but it was an act of pure stupitiy on my part that put me in that situation. I;m not sure I would feel as strongly about taking a class right now had it not been for that experience. I think it is important that we all error on the side of safety in these matters.

I took the MD boater safety course last weekend. It was a good review, but was pretty shallow in its coverage of most topics. It is required in MD for anyone born July 1 1972 or after. I think everyone should take at least a basic course. You just don't know what you don't know.

Online is better than nothing ...but I liked being able to ask questions of the instructors, if something wasn't clear to me..or if I wanted a bit more indepth answer...and remember ..there are NO dumb questions..only the ones you don't ask....

You can NEVER have too much knowledge....

I agree with Chalkguy - Online is better than nothing, but it's always nice to ask a question now and then.

I am a Coast Guard Aux instructor - If you have any questions, feel free to ask them and I'll do my best to answer them.

Wiley - If you want to set up an area similar to the Vendors Forum for people to get answers to Coast Guard questions I'd be willing to answer their questions. Maybe there is a few more instructors out there that would participate also????

I have now spent a few hours with this class through their on-line tutorials. While initially excited about the class, I now think it is much too basic for nearly anyone who is likely reading this forum. So, before anyone else spends the $$, it is my opinion at least that this course really does'nt amount to a serious boaters safety class. I am, after all, going to take the in-person Coast Guard class.

I've taken the power squadron course a couple times (refreshers are good for meeting fellow boaters you know ).

Ignorance is bliss, but education could save your butt.

On-line or other at home lessons are ok, but as others have mentioned, it's better to be in a room full of students who are asking questions. It's kinda like brainstorming - you get the benefit of answers to questions you may not think of asking.

I agree with the others that you can't beat the classroom for the boating course. My entire family has taken safe boating courses at some time or other. After over 30 years of boating and moving to a new area that I'd like to explore, I will be taking another course course together with my wife. We'll be taking advanced coastal navigation. Education doesn't hurt.
