Default Suzuki DF 140 knocks in reverse

I have twin 2002 DF 140s and one has an occasional violent knock when in reverse. This occurs mainly when it is cold and I am applying some throttle to it (pulling off of the trailer, manuvering in a marina...) Once it is warmed up it still knocks occasionally but less violently and less frequently. I have no issues with the other engine and the engine in question does not display any other symptoms? Any ideas

Sounds like it is popping out of gear and going back into gear.check shift rod and see if it,s adjusted properly .

The engine is actually turning in the same direction regardless of whether the control says forward or reverse.
