Default Kicker Motor Suggestions

I'm considering getting a kicker motor, to save $ on fuel, and need some advice.
First, is it necessary to have a 20" shaft on the kicker motor, or would a standard 15" shaft do? If the kicker is mounted on an adjustable mounting bracket, instead of directly to the transom, would a 15 inch shaft work? This will be mounted to a 21 foot Sea Pro CC.

What type of kicker do you use? and what is the shaft length?

Any advice is appreciated.

I've got an older Honda 8 on a 21'WA and for me it's perfect. When I need a new one it'll be the Yamaha High Thrust 8, it's truely designed to do the job. Shaft length all depends on what kind of bracket you use.

Thanks GhostShip,
Is the shaftlength on your kicker a 20? or a 15? Also, do you use a mounting bracket?

Mine's on a Garelick adjustable bracket w/ 11" of travel. The shaft on my Honda is 23" from the mounting surface to the cavitation plate. If you've got room on the transom a 15" might work. A fixed bracket might require a 25" shaft, it all depends on how it's mounted. Do a search for "kicker" there's been a number of discussions in the last 6 months.

I have ran several different kickers and The Yamaha T8 is by far the best I have ever used. You can get it with power tilt and electric start. Ithas a hight thrust prop that can trol down to 1.0 mph on my 21' conquest and still have enuff thrust to hold speed into a chop. Thats the biggest porblem with a kicker, trying to keep speed and heading into a chop or wind and the T8 does a great job.

I have kickers on both of my boats.I run a T8 Yamaha high thrust four stroke long shaft on my 23'SeaCraft.It's an awesome motor, runs like a watch, and has power trim.I have it mounted on a stationary bracket.

I also run an older 9.9 Yamaha high thrust on my 22' Trophy.it is also a long shaft 20"motor.It's mounted on a Garelick heavy duty offshore bracket with 15" of vertical travel.

I've had such great luck with Yamaha kickers, that I would never change, but Honda also makes a very nice high thrust.I troll for eight to ten hours at a time and they never miss a beat.I'm pushing around 5,500 lbs in the Seacraft, and about 4,500 in the Trophy and they handle it fine.My top speed is around 6mph,but they troll effortlessly and could get me home, in an emergency.

Both of my boats are I/O's and I needed long shafts(20")I woulds assume you would need the same.

I have two boats.
First, a 22 hydrasport walkaround. I have a honda 15hp long shaft on an omc retractable bracket.
Second, a 170 boston whaler montauk. I have a mercury (tohatsu) 6hp long shaft in a stainless steel retractable bracket.

No problems on the kickers. Both will start on the first or second attempt.
Also note that I tilt up the kicker and strap them down while running.

By far the best Kicker for a boat is either the Yamaha T8 ot T9.9. They are specifically designed to be used as a kicker. Big Prop, larger Lower end gears to push heavy loads. A standard portable outboard isnt designed to be pushing a heavy load...

These yamaha's are attached to almost every boat out here in the Northwest where we troll slow for salmon(1.5-3.5 mph). They are a great motor and the electric start (alternator will charge your battery) and power tilt is the way to go...!!

Shaft length will depend on your boat, and where you mount it. Its the same deal as your main motor. It has to be mounted low enough for your prop to see clean water, or it wont perform as well..
