The Yamaguchi 200 HPDI manual says to change the high pressure pump oil every 900 hours. My mechanic just told me he thinks that's a "Typo" cause his service manual says "every 100 hours". I have the service manu al home, but until then, anyone else know what it is supposed to be?
That is a crock, I just had my HPDI serviced and did not have to cchange the oil pump and it was the 100hr service. I would go to another mechanic. And I know for a fact that the oil pump is not cheap. Get a second opinion.
This is not changing the oil pump, but rather the oil in the pump. It takes hardly any time at all to change the oil. Easy to do every season. 900 hours seems like a long time to wait to change this oil...
I just had a conversation with a mechanic that I have not used and he told me that it was required to change the oil in the pump every 100hrs. When I told him that is not what my owners manual said, he told me that there was alot that needed to be done that was in the service manual and not in the owners manual. He also told me that I should replace the thermostats every 100 hours as well. He recommended changing the O2 sensor every 500 hours. I have over 700 hours and have never changed oil in pump, thermostats or O2 sensor. I did not have alot of confidence in what he was telling me as my current mechanic said that was a bunch of %@#!. I would be interested in hearing what the service manual says, as I don't have it.
Change gear oil 100 hrs
Check HPDI pump belt 200 hrs
Replace above belt 1000 hrs
Replace above oil 1000 hrs. (uses common 80-90 gear oil, like lower unit)
Clean water seperator 10 hrs.
Clean oil tank drain 10 hrs
no mention of changing or checking water pump or T-stat repair/replace
Yamaha bases repair intervals based off 200 hrs/yr, example, replace HPDI pump oil @ 1000 hrs or 5 years!
HPDI waterpump is typical rubber, IMO, change pump when "pee" stream gets weak. Unless one sucks trash, do not expect a catastrophic failure. My point in printing above maintaince is show how much BS there is about motor maintaince. Again, IMO, it is not necessary to constantly be paying motor mechanics to change "like new" parts out of your motor.
Mercury recomends inspecting the impeller in my 200 SW Classic OB every 100 hours, Same interval as lower unit oil change. I just bought the whole pump repair kit including the housing & impeller ($40 at my Merc dealer) for my first 100 hour service. It is so much work (boat is on a lift) getting the impeller out to inspect it that I just figured on replacing all the wearable parts while I was in there.
The pump was running ok but the impeller did show wear and there was scoring of the end plates. I showed the parts to the dealer. He said it looked like a little sand had gotten in and that it was common around here.
To me it is cheap insurance to just plan on replacing those parts every 100 hours considering the possible damage due to pump failure. Of course I change the plugs every 100 hours too.
I have never got less than 600hrs out of a set of water pumps and never had one fail, just replaced them because they were lasting so long. I have over 600hrs on my original pumps on my OX66 225s right now and I'm not worried at all. I went 1100hrs on a set of pumps on 1995 Yam 200s and the mechanic said they looked great when they came out.
The water pump isn't generally the problem, unless like someone mentioned earlier you are
running in shallow mud all the time or you suspect you may have damaged it.
The biggest concern is gettting the bolts out and the housing to come loose.

How will you find out one has failed?
If you are idling at the dock its no big deal. What if you are pushing the motor hard running in a rough inlet when it fails ?
water pumps and t-stats are cheap insurance. If you run in shallow sandy or muddy areas, every 2 years minimum, maybe every year. Just got a new 04 hpdi. They moved things around a little. Thermoststats are right no the back. Easy to change. Not so for the previous hpdi's
Yeah, guys, the question is in regard to the OIL in the HP pump, NOT the pump itself. The cost of this change is almost nothing as it is a 5 minute job. So my mechanic (who is a personal friend of mine) is not trying to sell me anything. To me, it seems it would need to be changed, that pump works awfully hard spinning all the time, how could the oil last so long? 900 hours is a long time for oil, no?
Anywho, you DEFINITILY want to change the water pump impeller. Your nuts if you don't.
