Default Paint old boat?

First of all thanks to all that make this such a great web site for all us "boat-a-holics"
I have a an old Sears Gamefisher that I use for prowling around in the shallows and hitting the honey holes in a canal by my house.
The problem is that the every time you drag a bare arm over the gunnel, about a half an hour later you have the same skin irritation that you would get from house insulation.
Would painting the boat prevent this from happening?
What type of paint should I use?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

If you've got raw glass showing then painting would seal it up and prevent the itch. Depending on what you want to get out of the paint job you have a variety of options. Exterior gloss latex paint will seal the surface as well as anything ($) or an epoxy paint (one part $$ or two part $$$) or go up to real paint systems with primer and top coat ($$$$ - $$$$$).

Whatever you use you will need to sand the surface so that the paint will adhere. 180 to 220 grit is good enough. You can patch any problem areas with filler if you want to get a good finish.

Interlux brightside should do the trick - West Marine has it. You can brush it on and get pretty decent results.

Its funny, I have the same boat with the same problem. I've used Brightsides and its pretty good. I'm sure it'll do the trick.
