Check out the videos.
I just used it to repair a 6 inch slice in my boat cover and am very pleased with this product.

I'd put a sunbrella patch on the outside and an equal sized vinyl patch on the inside. This will prevent the light from wearing another hole.

I lent by boat to a friend, and he didn't secure a davit, which wore a hole in the Sunbrella camper enclosure. I got a piece of 2" wide binding, cut a 2" long piece, with a hot knife (sealed edges) and put in it place with "Marine goop" I have the capability of sewing on a patch, but this works as well and is much faster. The vinly inside would be a good idea.

I've used iron on patches from the fabric store or sewing department and then sewn around the edges but that was for applications where a perfect color match wasn't important.

If it's a nice top in good condition on a nice boat, taking it to a canvas shop for repair would be the best solution. And they can reinforce the area if necessary.
