70 hp evinrude running rough in gear at idle - The Hull Truth

I have a 1995 evinnrude 70 hp that is running a little rough. I cleaned the carbs out and it runs great as long as your running above a slow idle and it idle ok also. But as long as you put it in gear is where it screws up. If you try and ease around it it will cut off and you have to fast idle it and choke to get it to crank. THen it will run ok and if you fast idle it and throw the throlle down quick it will be ok. It has no real problem cranking but you a lot of time have to choke and fast idle it. You can put the muffs on it and it will run all day. BUt it won't idle around in gear. Thanks for any info. Jimmy

Did you rebuild the carbs or spray cleaner?

I had a guy tear them down and cleaned them out. Before that I had the same problem but it also wouldn't run up top. He said the center carb was stoped up. But he really didn't want to tackle this one. Don't guess he knows as much as he though.

take it to a reputable dealer in your area...they will diagnose it and repair it without the problems that come from back yard/shade tree guys that you will be married to forever trying to get the problem figured out. the dealer will take a compression test first to see if you have anything worth repairing,then he will perform a spark test to verify ignition. the problem you are describing sounds like the carbs were not cleaned properly,this is a very simple motor and the carbs are very basic and easily cleaned by a professional....good luck

Get a cheap spin on fuel filter also. Wal-mart has them. The first guy may have fixed the problem but dirty fuel may have caused it again.

Probably not it, but they do have idle adjustment screws on the carbs that may be off - a compression check is the place to start though - plus do a decarb on it which you can do yourself - don't think thats the whole issue but might help.

As stated you try to save money with the shade tree guy and end up frustrated and throwing parts at it which gets more expensive.
