talked to my sister who lives on mercer island and she told me about it. My niece knows the kids that were in the one boat. She said something about one of the boats did not have the running lights on.
I am sure the full details will be coming out soon................ Its a tragedy but one I believe should of never happened.

Not only will the details come out. The THT experts will have the whole thing fugured out and blame established long before knowing the fact or circumstances before tomorrow

Two high profile accidents this month and they both involved Bayliners. Maybe if Olympic Boat Centers closes, the local waters won't be quite as dangerous.

Yep, that would be me.
If you're going 25 MPH in the dark and run into another boat and kill somebody, you might be at fault.

Bob
Can you point me where a Bayliner is mentioned as being one of the boats involved? I don't see a reference to the make of either boat.

Re: Another boating collision, death in Washington State
It's unfortunately not uncommon for a boat to get run over at night; especially when there's no moon and there are shore lights. All too often the sitting boat turns off it's anchor light, but a little light like that doesn't do a whole lot when the color of this light is the same as most shore lights.
I would personally never sit in the middle of a bay or lake at night without a cockpit light or similar light ON. Of course, if those on board were young and having a party and didn't want to be seen.....

Which is part of the reason responsible boat operators don't operate at 25MPH in the dark.

x2, especially on lakes or in bays where anchoring is regularly allowed and expected.

I travel alot at night fresh and salt , One of the most common things I run into is there is always a ski boat with no lights on out on the lake usally just sitting there
And there is always at least 1 salilboat with no lights on out on the salt waters of wa , just last week end I pick up a blip on radar and shure enough it was a sail boat no lights at all , Not to often do I see a sport or commercial fishing boat with out proper lights
I think sail boats do that to save battery juice !

I like the 'no wake' at night rule. Responsible boating us up to us all. All it takes is some hot-rod smart @&% drinking & racing a boat around to make it unsafe for us all.

There was also a fatality on Lake Washington the same weekend. A 17 year old crashed into an anchored sailboat killing one of the passengers on the sailboat.

OK folks, I've got a question for the experts.
I've always heard it was very poor form to keep a spotlight on at night while moving....
But how the heck are you supposed to see a blacked out boat on a moonless night (or overcast) if you DONT have a light on?
The only thing that makes sense in this situation is to move slowly and have some form of wide-angle, moderate intensity light going all the time so that you can see far enough in front of you to spot and avoid a blacked out boat / log / other obstruction.....
Is there any real alternative? I'm 52 and still have good vision but I can't see in the dark and I certainly can't make out a dark boat -- or one of those pesky bouys from a crab trap either. The other night I was coming back in with a spotlight, carefully momentarily illuminating each marker on the channel, when a much larger boat comes outbound with not one but TWO lights shining forward. I moved out of the way and let him by, but I completely understand their concern. I don't think he needed THAT much light, but what is the argument against a modest light?
