Default E10 Gas in Va and my old two stroke

I wanted to ask some of the experts in here that know about motors particularly older 2 strokes.

This weekend was probably the last time I will be able to use standard gas for my Evinrude 92 two stroke 88spl. It appears that almost all gas stations have E10 now in Va. and I understand the marinas are being pushed to use it.

My local marine repair shop (Ace Marine) has recommended I install a filter standard with new Yamaha motors, a 10 micron filter system. Aside from adding fuel stabilizer, storing my boat away from water, running the motor dry after use, closing the vent when not in use, trying to use all the fuel each time and limit fuel storage, looks like the only other thing I can do?

The motor is on a 1970 17' whaler, I have three 6.5 gallon portable fuels tanks. My boats is stored under a boat cover in my driveway miles away from open water.

Any feedback appreciated.

thanks

John

Not to hijack, but how well does that 88 Spl push your 17' Whaler? I have a 17' Whaler that needs power and I'm looking at a 1988 Johnson 88 Spl that was supposedly only used in F/W. Also, how hard is it to tilt up that 88 Spl by hand? Those motors don't have any power trim or tilt, right?

No problem at all with the E-10 switch. I did run down very low on gas, then drain the rest out before filling up with E-10. I already had a Racor fuel/water seperator/filter. The motor is a 98' 150 hp Merc. two stroke. My mechanic said only two of his customers did it right.

When I was using portable tanks I had a spare hose with primer bulb so that any leftover fuel could be
drained into the car or lawnmower. When I would use the boat I would refill with fresh fuel. I also ran
the engine dry before winter storage for many years with a carbed motor, never had fuel problems. If
you are running with 50:1 premix you may want to mix in the gas over a few weeks time to thin it out
in a car. The advantage to doing this is you are using the gas while still fresh in any event and the
boat motor always has fresh gas without water build up. I also have a filter on the boat too.

I use Stabil during the boating season now but will empty the tank after the last trip of the season.

thanks you guys for the feedback, really appriciate this!

DoubleClutch,
as for the 88spl, if you have more questions pm or email me but it seems to work great for my whaler. What I have found I like about the 88spl is its carbed, easy to care for seems to run well. It does about 38mph at WOT abut I tend to cruise at 32 if its flat water. Although it has no power T/T I am able to lift the motor ok. Not the lightest object to lift but for a guy on the water in rough conditions, not a problem at all.
