Default 40 HP Merc Help

Son took the 13 footer out this weekend. Before he left I made sure the tank had fresh gas and ran it on the muffs for a while. It hadn't been run in a while and was a little rough at first but finally smoothed out and was running just fine on the trailer. When he got to the lake the boat started right up ran just fine. He trolled for a while and then tried to open it up again. It would run fine then seem to die back down to an idle. This happened several times so he just put it back on the trailer and brought it home. I'm a mechanical moron but wanted to ask here before taking it to the shop. Motor is a 40 HP carbed Merc.

Just a guess, but I would check the carb. or gas filter for a clog. Since it sat for a while, some sediment or something may have been sucked through the system and is sitting in the carb or filter blocking fuel flow.

This just happenned to me in July. Took off the bowls and there were flecks in the bottom bowl. After you take them off, spray the insides and jets with carberator cleaner. That will probably be as far as you need to break them down.

Be careful with the bowl gasket. Put it back into its place ASAP because somtimes they stretch and sometimes they shrink.

Good luck!
