Default Compare 250 Optimax and Yamaha F 250

How loud is one compared to the other, especially at low rpm?

How much smoke/oil smelldoes the opti produce?

Thanks!

You're comparing a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke, but that being said.....at low rpm's neither one is loud. the F250 might be a little quieter. The newer DFI Opti's are exceptionally clean burning engines, they just plain don't smoke or even smell if you're comparing them to the older carb'd or EFI engines. I have an '08 175 Pro Xs, 3 star emmision rating, never saw a bit of smoke come out of it.......love it.

Apples and oranges....my question: what type boat and what is your application?....You need to decide 2 stroke DI or 4 stroke technology..then look at your local dealers..if you aren't buying and just want an opinion....do a search...if you are looking to repower, we need more info.....

Opti = no smoke. hint of 2 stroke smell only going down wind trolling. found it to be a lot louder at idle than a 4 stroke but i had a cabin boat. CC guys complain less about the noise than I would in a pilothouse. I loved the 225 OptiMax I had it performed flawlessly the 3 years and 450+ hours I had it.

don;t get me wrong, I love opti's as I had two sets of them with no problems @ 600 hours each, but the opti's sound like chain saws compared to F250...compared to a HPDI 250, they are a bit louder...

I just finished rigging a 225 last night and the engines being produced right now are very quiet at idle, I would say jusyt a skosh louder than an E-tec. Once up and running, they are no louder than a Yamaha 4-stroke, just with a much better sounding howl than the tinny V6 4-stroke sound we have all grown used to. You will notice more vibration at slower speeds, but the midrange acceleration and economy more than makes up for it.

My 2004 Contender 27 was originally rigged with F225's and later repowered with F250's. As the picture below shows she sits a little low in the rear. The picture shows the boat with about a 50 gals of gas and no other load. The F250's weigh 604 lbs and the 250 Optimax weighs 505 lbs. The boat runs great, planes quickly with Rev 4's, and will top at in the mid to upper 50's.When I'm running at less than planning speed the back really squats. I'm just exploring the wisdom from those who have experience with the new Optimaxes. I really do appreciate the dialogue.

Tommy,

Well, at least this time you're not changing the whole boat.......just the engines. Sounds like you need a ride on my Kencraft to check out the Opti's. Not sure if there is much difference between the 07's and 09's.

I love my twin Opti 225's on my Whaler Conquest 295, at idle no problem, at 4k they are very LOUD. My twin Yamaha's 150's on my Cobia 254CC no noise issues at any speed, but not the punch of a 2 stroke. If I was to repower today I'd take a long hard look at an E-TEC. Lighter weights, much lower noise levels than my Opti's about the same as a four stroke, and you still get the two stroke torque.

Within the last year, the Optis have had a giant reduction in NVH...

My 2007 250 opti pro xs is quite at idle but you can here the compressor .
Friends f250 is a little more quite at idle . but at speeds the opti has a better growel but about the same noise level The opti is no wisper at idle like the f250 but close
I was impressed with the quietness of the yami but i dont need to be wisper quite i would kill starters , I am always trying to start my yami kicker thats already running , the opti compressor lets you know its running

I do like yamis and they make a great product

For my aplaction
I would be dissipointed if there was a f250 on the back of my boat mainley because my boat has a single and its very heavy and gets loaded down with tackle . heavy shrimp pots ect all the stuff to boat camp with ect the list goes on and on .
It should have twins for all the extra crap on board but not a option

If it was just a day fishing boat or 2000 lbs lighter a f250 would be a great pick
, My firend loves his on the same hull but he runs lighter and uses it for a day boat

THe performance numbers are better with lots more lbs on board with the opti and mpg same or better

I can pack more lbs and get a 7 mph slower plane with better mid range & top end performance
both are great products ,

As far as smell I get more complaints about my 8hp yami 4 stroke carbed kicker and never one about my opti

If you are not worried about the most power and want something a little more quiet at idle the yami is a great pick . I think yami has a classy look to them when on the back of a boat and the

Mercs have a more go fast look to me
I have been around 2004 optis and they are alot louder then mine , but the noise dont bother me . as long as its not a old carbed 2 stroke now thats noise but you gota love them

hoppe this was helpfull !
