Sierra and Yamaha make 10 micron spin on filters. I believe there are two thread sizes. OMC has a larger thread and Mercury/Yamaha uses the smaller thread.

Sierra makes filters for both the OMC and Mercury/Yamaha filter heads.

Racor makes a standard spin on 10 micron filter that fits a standard Mercury base that does not have the drain bowl Racor's usually have. I use them in the closed transom of my boat.

why should one NOT put a Racor with drain bowl in a closed transom? I just replaced my cartridge only with a bowl type, so I can see this dreaded E10 and curse it.

No reason at all not to put a Racor with clear plastic bowl in a closed compartment. In fact, the can of the filter does not rust as quickly when the filter is inside and out of the elements as it does when the filter is exposed.

Outboards = filters with clear plastic bowls, inside or outside.
Inboards = filters with metal bowls.

The Racor 10 micron without the bowl is the Parker PFF 5510

Too many places for something to leak for me.

I think the Coast Guard is worried about the plastic bowl melting in a fire. I believe they reccommend a steel bowl.

IIRC plastic bowls cannot be in machinery spaces (engine room or genset compartments) per the USCG.

For the what its worth department. I have used both Yamaha 10 micron and the Sierra 10 micron (both standard types). The Yamaha is a lot longer, I do not know if that means it holds more or has more area to filter than the Sierra?? Now with E10 on the scene I change my filters right at 50 hours religiously and have been using the Sierras.

The plastic ones are ok in the transom of outboards, just like it's ok not to have blowers in that area. Inboards, the plastic are not ok and you have to have blowers. kinda sucks to crank that engine without running them blowers. No gas fume fire worries no need for the steel bowl.

I don't see why a plastic would be anymore leaky than a steel bowl if they are sealed tight.

There isn't any pressure, just hand tight and it'll never leak. Put it on too tight and they're a PIA to get off.
