Default 88hp evinrude/johnson???

Just wanted to get some thoughts about these motors. I have a 90hp evinrude that I really like, and I know that they made the 48 and 88hp's. I am assuming they did this for some boat reasons? Can anyone tell me if these engines are any good, are they basically the same as the 90hp's as far as parts? Thanks.

88 and 90 in a 90 degree cross flow are the same except 88 has no oil injection. The "special's" 48, 88, 112 motors were cheaper in cost. They are all good basic motors and were made many years.

I actually prefer the specials personally. Working at a local garage on outboards I found us either replacing VRO pumps on the oil injected engines, or "un-VROing" engines and making them equivalent to the specials as the many of the VRO pumps at this age seem to be prone to failure. That 48 special especially is a nice simple engine, I've seen quite a few skiffs around here with them still hanging off the stern.

I have a 48 special. Good motor, easy to work on & reliable.
You mix the fuel yourself so you know the oil ratio is right.

Had an 88 speical, what a great engine, ran forever, starting could be difficult occasionally, but once she ran, she ran.

What year 90hp? Depending on the year . . . 90 could be a looper and the 88 is a crossflow.

I have a 96 90 evinrude. It is on a pontoon that I have, I was looking for a trailer and ran across a pontoon with the 88 on a trailer. Pretty much buy the trailer get the boat for free deal. Thinking of seting it up for a fishing barge. Anyhow I love my 90 always has been dependable. Thanks for all the input.

Both are dependable . . . The looper is a little better on fuel.
