Random Quote: Vegetarian, Indian term for a bad fisherman
A friend of mine is looking at these 2 boats. We have seen/riden on the Spectra which has the Yanmar diesels and talked to a guy in Venice, LA last year that loved his. Now a deal on a 34' Yellowfin w/ trip 300 V's has coe along. Money aside, what are all the opinions out there?
I was not impressed with a 37 spectra that I looked at a dealer. I like our CV a lot better, but the economy is no where near as good. Also, the asking price on the spectra was laughable. I would 34-36 YF any day over the spectra.
we looked real close at the spectra and even test rode one.they are great riding boat's and i was more impressed with the fuel mileage than anything else.but again your comparing it to a yellow fin and i think quality between the two would go to yellow fin they are what all boat's should be.with that being said still a dual diesel engine, trailerable boat for around 200k has a place in the market.again if fuel was no issue i would opt for the yellow fin in a heartbeat.if i wanted something that had a 600 mile range and was still a quality boat i would look hard at the spectra.

just curios.why laughable on price?what other twin diesel trailerable boat is there to compare with in there price range?
They were asking in the 275K range at the time. The boat just wasn't that nice to me for the money. There were small things I did not like. The fishability was relatively poor IMO due to the engine box. Finish was not as nice as our 34 CV and our CV seemed to have more room. The 36/37 spectre is the same as their 34 with the extra space taken up by the engines. For the 275K that they were asking, you could have a twin diesel CV (not as fast though) or a 35 Strike (again not as fast). I am not sure on the 36 Island runner price, but I would think it would cost less and be similar quality. I just was not impressed with the boat for the money. It is not a bad boat, it just did not meet expectations.
i agree on the motor box,but i also found that with the platform you could still fight a fish all the way around the boat [not that i catch anything that big].the one i looked at was in the low 200's and i thought was reasonable at the time.
around the transom would be tough and it does seem when your in it your a mile away from the rear but you can stand on top of the transom and motor box and walk around.i did not say what i meant,i was referring to you could fish from every standing spot on the boat as there is plenty of walking room.my last CC you could not fish and walk around other people who was fishing as it was so tight.
O, i thought we were talking about a different boat, but you cant compare the two hulls in fit and finish and rough weather performance, Yellowfin. Spectre makes a great product, nice, but Wylie builds a hull that is second to none. I would fish on either, but only BUY one, Yellowfin.
As for the fishablity, I thought the same thing on the Spectre but if a fish heads to the back a=fo the boat and is CLOSE at least on the Spectre you can literally walk the fish around (seas allowing), my Wellcraft with trips- I'm F#$%ed! Spectre even ounted a fighting chair ontop of the motor hatch for some guy in Italy that wanted a fighting chair!
Both boats are great and for my friend i think the fuel milage will finally be the decision maker.
That being said, i hope that one day I can sell the Wellcraft and order my dream boat- Yellow 36' Yellowfin! What a hell of a boat!
I looked at the spectre as well. I had a boat with a yanmar and loved it. One thing that concerned me is that when you replace the impeller every year of the spetre you may have to pull each engine out to do it. The engine room is very tight. Just a thought
