Default Broken Propshaft on 225 Opti

I was running yesterday about 25 miles off at about 28 to 30 knots, when all of a sudden my port motor revs up to the rev limiter and sounds the alarm. I shut her down and raise the motors thinking I spun a prop. To my surprise the lower units break the surface and my prop and propshaft are gone on the port motor. So I limped back to port, tied her up and realized the shaft had actually snapped clean off inside the gearcase. Has anyone ever seen this before? I'm thinking maybe I had run over a free floating line and wrapped the prop. I thought the shearing washer was supposed to break free to prevent something like this from happening?

I snapped one off flush at the seal on a Susie years ago. What showed was that at one time I did hit something, but it didn't break the shaft all the way. When mine went out,I was putting the boat on the trailer on a very steep boat ramp.As you said, the motor rev supper high at the time.I had to go for a swim in 40 drg water to get my wheel back.

On yours,if you can see the other part of the shaft, look real close to see if there was a crack in it,then you will see the fresh break.

Mine snapped off just behind the seal. I spoke with a friend of mine who is a Mercury mechanic and he said I had to of hit something that stopped the prop from spinning. I'm waiting for my insurance co. to send out an adjuster, I am hoping they will pick it up.
