Default F250 making oil?

I really don't understand this concept of making oil. I changed the oil about a month ago and I now noticed that the oil level was way over the high mark. I drained some out to get the correct level.

Why and how does this happen? Can the oil level getting too high do any damage?

If I am really making oil I guess I can bottle it to supplement my income.

it is probably gas getting into your oil. My fathers fishing buddy had the problem until he lost a powerhead.

I did a search on making oil. I followed the break in procedure, but now at 20 hours I don't believe I'm running the engine hard enough. I do alot of fluke fishing just outside the harbor, so alot of starting , stopping and low rpm's. This weekend I will really push her and see what happens. I guess everytime out I should open her up. Hope that's it.

that's the key,in my opinun.you can't baby it and have the breakin go right.follow the breakin guide in the manual and run it hard a few minutes.i run the gut's out of mine for a mile or 2 on the way in.

Had the same problem with my F225 the first year. I changed the oil and ran it hard. Now, after 800 hours, it hasn't ever happened again.

Hi,

Some explanation of the making oil problem: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158085

I have a Yamaha F115 and used it for 6 seasons now and never had any problem with making oil.
I runt it on higher RPM on almost every trip.

I have a new F250. It does not make oil. I did run it hard BEFORE the 20 hour service to help avoid this. A lot of guys will tell you to run it hard in the beginning while the cylinders walls still have the cross hatching that help seat the rings. The longer it is "babied" the longer it will take to stop making oil since the cylinders are now smooth. My advise would be to run it hard sooner than later and you should be fine.

I'd also change the oil first. You drained off some of the oil, but that means you still have fuel mixed in the oil. That is changing the viscosity and effectivness of the oil. Change it now, run it hard, check oil level. If it's fine, you're good to go.

The beest advice I heard from a great tech is "at least 3 min at or near WOT every time you're out - on the way home"

I have my F250 in the shop for another problem and asked the mechanic about this problem today because I thought my oil was a little high. He said that he's found that most of the time people are finding their oil high is after they've been sitting for a while and all the oil has dropped out of the filter and out of the engine. He said that oil should be checked after running for at least three minutes, then let it sit 30 seconds for the most accurate measurement of actual oil level. He said he hasn't seen a problem with making oil on the F250 except for boats that do lots and lots of all day trolling. He said that if you smell the dipstick it will smell like gas and that's the signal of this problem. He did say that they did have a real problem with the F115 making oil on a continuous basis.

He should have shown you the service bulletin: here is the Yamaha service bulletin that talks about how to check and the false reading you can get:
