Default Outboards

In the market for a new 140-175HP outboard. Was hoping I could get some opinions on 4 stroke Yamaha vs. 4 stroke Suzuki. Good points and bad. Good stories and bad. My dealer is a friend that sells OMC and Yamaha. That's why Merc/Honda are left out of the equation. Thanks for help.

Have had both (yanmmies and Rudes).. Both were fine.. , Since the same dealer who you like have both, Go by price, my current and newest are 2001 Rudes - no problems. IMHO.

most johny rude dealers are strugling ? honda has that hot new 150hp out . the johnson 4 strokes are made by suzuki and the merc 4strokes are made mostly by yamaha . Brunswick has just bought out all of genmars aluminum boat lines . Its hard to keep up with all this change and what was a good motor yesterday may not be today . It will be interesting to see what happens to johnyrude dealers now that most of the aluminum boat lines have been bought up by merc . It seems that bombardiere was giving all the deals to the boat dealers and heavy handing their loose motor dealers in favor of package dealers who now will not be able to buy these boats with johnyrude motors . and the lawsuit that merc filed with the federal trade comishion against all japanise motor manufacturers (this includes yamaha) has been causing great tension between these two partner companies . change can be a good thing but not allways and not for everyone . it will be interesting to watch but it sure complicates the purchase decision with questions like how long will this company be around or if they or their partners will be suplying parts

make sure you hull can handle the weight of a 4 stroke (it was probally built for a two stroke).

The difference in weight between 2 stroke and 4 stroke, although not a negligible amount, is NOT so much that you have to worry about the transom rating.

Personally, I'd save the money and buy a 2 stroke.

If your boat can handle the weight of a 4 stroke, consider one (actually the new fours are not that much heavier than some 2 strokes). Super smooth, smoke free, and quiet. My Suzi DF140 runs perfect. If you have a good dealer in your area, I don't think you can go wrong. I think the price is resonable for the Suzi too. I've had mine for two seasons with no problems. Heads and tails above the 2 strokes I've own, in my opinion. Great holeshot too!!

Spring is coming!!!

How many hours will you use your boat each year.I run mine approx 50 hours each year and went with a Johnson 175 2 stroke. The differance in price was thousands. It would take so many years to make up differance in fuel savings.Besides anyone can work on the 2 stroke.
