Default Keel guards. Are they worth it and do they work?

I have heard about stick on keel guards and was wondering if they are worth the investment or are they hype? Thanks!

where i fish it's really shallow water and lot's of rock's and oyster bed's.so for me it's a must in my opinion hole's are better than a broke skeg

I think he is talking about the stick on kind that go on the hull.

Not a skeg guard.

If you beach the boat or there is anything for it to hit on the trailer, you would enjoy having a Keel Guard. They are great for peace of mind and the warranty makes it even better.

They work great and especially if you've already buggered it up. Just make sure you follow the directions EXACTLY!

Do they reduce resale?

Reduce? I'd rather have a boat with one than without.

Resale value depends on whether or not the prospective buyeragrees with the need(same area and use).If you decide to go ahead take some "before" pics so you can show a perspective buyer that you're not just covering up some damage.

Follow directions. I have heard where moisture gets trapped between guard & hull & causes blisters in the gelcoat

I'm getting one. Just found several scratches and a couple small chips in the gelcoat in the front keel area of my boat, and it's brand new. Looks like the keel has rubbed a crossmember a few times while loading/unloading.
So i'll be putting one on after i get the gelcoat repair done.

I just installed one on Sunday on my Montauk..........

Sunday was sunny and hot, the perfect day for installing the keel guard. It turned out to be a pretty simple job and it turned out great. The biggest PITA was getting my 6'3 220lb body under the keel. Clean, Scuff, Clean, Clean, and then Primer. I started about 4 inches below the bow eye and ended up going over the strake. I think a big key is having the guard nice and hot. I laid it on the boat deck of the boat for a good two hours. This really helped to soften up the rubber. To finish up I added a very thin bead of 5200 to the guard edges after the install.

You can see photo's here.............http://s268.photobucket.com/albums/j...ills%20Covers/

I installed one on my last boat, but in places the tape began to peel away from the guard. I contacted Keelguard about it, and they said I could pull the whole thing off, return it, and they would give me another one, or they recomended some 2 part flexible epoxy that I could purchase to reattach the tape to the keel guard. The epoxy worked, but it was an additional $20 that they didn't reimburse me for..although they did send me two SS "skuff buster" plates when I complained about it.

Now that I have the epoxy, I would buy one again. I thought it was an excellent idea for a product and how I use my boat.

I know thet can spray products like Line-X at different textures now and I was thinking the stuff would make an excellent keel guard if sprayed on smooth.

Just wondering what that stuff would do to your hull? Doesn't it come out of the guy around 200F?

Make sure that you buy one long enough so that that after you beach the boat and then go to reverse off of the sand bar it doenst pull the end edge of the keel guard off of the boat or keep loosening it over time.

It goes pretty far up under the keel.
