Default Evinrude 250 D/I Leaking oil

Have a low hour set of 2002 evinrude 250 D/I Ficht. They have right at 100 hours and are very clean, run extremely well and start up first try everytime. The problem is the seem to be leaking oil. After I run the motors and I leave the boat sitting with th emotors tilted up a small pool of blackish/blue 2 stroke oil develops on the bracket from the motors. I also notice completly unused blue oil sometime dripping down the backs of the motors. From what I have read this is normal but I wanted to verify that I don't have more going on here. Is there anything I need to do?

Try replacing the air intake boxes. I had the same problem, and per my mechanic they had a recall on these at one point in time.

It's normal for some oil to accumulate in the airbox. When the airbox gets too full, some oil can leak out into the lower pan. The lower pan is formed from two halves so the oil may seep through the seam and into your motor well or down the back or down the sides of the leg because the pan does not form a tight seal around the leg.

I have a pair of 2002 225s (450+ hours) and they sometimes drop some oil in the motor well when they are tilted up.

Seeing clean blue oil (assume you are using XD-50), however, would have me checking for a leak. Do both motors show blue oil drips or just one?

i think you should have someone look at it, i dont have any oil leaking down the rear of the leg on my 99/225's, you may have a leak.

i also clean my side pans 2 a year.

no oil leaks here!

Try taking the cowel off and look for leaks

Clean them up and see if you have a leak after a couple trips

Oil leak through nthe intake is ok, drip down the leg is not. There was a recall on that particular issue..

just a bump to the top to see if any one else has any ideas. I have spoken with a couple of mechanics that have said this is normal but it still has me a little worried. Romanonj, any info on the recall or what it involved??

I had a pair of 01 250s that leaked when tilted up as your pictures show and down the mid section from under the cowlings. It was always a mess.I was told the bomb made changes to the throttle bodies that would correct it.

My '01 250 Ficht has always done it, exactly as you show. Mechanic and manufacturer both say it's normal, unburned oil or something. They can put an absorbant pad (Stayfree Evinrude Maxi Pad?) in there to soak it up, but you'd need to change it every so often. Better a little extra oil than not enough I think.

the oil really doesn't bother me that much b.c it is easy to clean up as long as everything is OK. I just keep wondering if something is wrong and if my motor is going to blow up or something from lack of oil. it sounds like this is common on these motors and everything is OK.

I recently replaced the oil lift pump on my 2001 225HP FICHT and studied the motor's oil flow extensively in the process. My motor doesn't leak any oil and it's not clear to me that your 250HP motors should be leaking any.

Could one of the previous responders to this post, who likely know more about FICHTs than I do, explain in more detail why the oil is leaking and how the airbox figures into that?

Mike

PS: jeffro22 -- what's the story behind 100 hours on 2002 motors????

was a leftover set that wasn't rigged until 04, used for one season then put inot storage before i bought them. check over by evinrude dealer that said they lookled great and shouldn't havew any problems. I have put about 50-60 hours and theny have been good motors so far. the only thing that has me worried is the oil leak but it sounds like no big deal

It is no big deal. Mine have been leaking a little bit of oil for years. If you pull the air box off, you'll see that there is a bit of oil accumulated at the bottom of it. Sometimes theres more, sometimes less. Depends on how the motor has been run.

Ditto on that. My E-Tecs had the same issue after the first 800 hours. Its the airbox, for some reason it gets a little lose and the spitback leaks out. Try tightening them down and cleaning up the oil and see if it occurs again. 99.9999% chance thats where its coming from. Right where the airbox seats to the engine intakes.

It won't hurt anything or affect performance but its an eye sore.
