Default Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...

Maybe this is a stupid move financially but As many of you know I had my boat loosely listed to see if I could afford to get in to a Judge Yachts 27 Chesapeake. Well today, after a sea trial a few weeks back and some negotiating, I have accepted an offer on my Maycraft. While the Maycraft is an AWESOME boat and has caught a lot of fish, I am completely looking forward to working with Judge on them building my new ride. I will be chosing the Honda 225 over the 250 suzuki primarily due to the 5 year warranty offered right now, ease of getting servicing parts, economy (about 8gph at 25mph cruise ), and sound levels at cruise . Plus, Judge has been rigging Honda much longer with VERY few problems. With a top speed of 38+mph with the Honda 225, it is all I need power wise anyhow. I am also hoping to get some great options like a dinette to port, cockpit steering, QL tabs, full dive platform on the bracket, etc. The boat will also be made of all top shelf composte materials. I am hoping the deal will be finalized soon (maybe as soon as tomorrow) so that Judge can officially begin production. It is GREAT to have such a fine builder in my back yard!

Here is what I hope to have soon
Judge Yachts 27' Chesapeake Outboard Custom Built Boat

This will make a pair of Judges in my family as my father runs a 2001 Judge downeast with twin 130 Hondas.

Now that I have settled on power. I am looking for the boards thoughts on the following subjects:

1. Help suggest an accent color. While I would love a light blue hull, it is not in the budget and it could be more difficult to care for, I am getting an all white hull. I wanted to go with a black enclosure, boot stripe and bottom paint. I think it would look best with the gray and black motor. However, the wife wanted me to select either all green or blue. She said it doesnt really matter to her but wanted to get the boards thoughts. Stick with black? If I had to chose a color, I would probably lean towards green...

2. Electronics. I am completely leaning towards the Garmin 3210 bundle as I really like my Garmin 3010c I have on the MayCraft. It is just a tough bargin to beat now. I am also thinking about the Northstar m121. For some reason I am intrrgued by this unit. It has a big screen, good fishfinder and I can add radar down the road. Others I am considering are the Garmin 4210 package and Ray C80. I dont need satelite features as I am primarily a near shore and big bay fisherman and I can get doplar radar, weather, etc for free on my blackberry.

3. Windlass. Probably get the lewmmar profish but the Quick windlass on my Maycraft was perfect and never let me down. However it wasnt a free fall

4. where to put the name? Pilothouse sides, hull sides or transoms. (or do I leave it off for the haters )

BTW, I hope to document the build to delivery process -- If you dont like it, dont read it (bet you will anyhow ) I will try to keep it all in this thread so not to spam the board.

Congrats on the sale of your Maycraft! The Maycraft is an awesome boat and it is hard to beileve that you are moving up to an even better boat. But, everything that I have seen about Judge I believe you are doing just that.....Moving Up!

Enjoy the build! I for one will be following along with every post you make.

Congrats it has been a long time coming I had a feeling the stars would align for you. Cause, last week (Saturday) I saw your Maycraft on its trailer in the Cape and while driving home a gorgeous Judge 24' passed me on route 2 (trailered). My jaw dropped I had never seen one. This Tuesday I was crabbing on the Rhode and Jeff Sykes zoomed past me in his new Judge 27' and I gave him a double thumbs up. Course both times I thought of you and your quest to get one. They are a beautiful lifetime boat.

Congrats! I hope the build process is as trouble free and as enjoyable experience as mine was with another builder. From the positive comments about Judge it should be.

I went with the Ray C80 and have been very pleased with it.

I think a black accent with the Honda would look good, but don't discount the Admiral's opinion if she wants another color. If you like green, even though this picture is of a FL yellow hull I think it would look as good on a white hull. It's a jade mist boot over a teal bottom.

congrats greg!

i like the green canvas...it's different, but will still look good with the silver and black honda. actually, i like the red in the pic you posted above. i went with the jockey red for my old whaler. definitely keep the boot stripe black...as you know the lighter colors at the waterline will stain from the bay's muck...but a green bottom to match the canvas would be pretty sweet.

as for the name. i've always felt like the transom is the only place to put it. and use a simple, classic font.

can't wait to see her running up and down the bay. btw, was the day i passed you near poddickery point the last day you ran the boat before selling?

Thanks for the kind words fellas.
Maybe you will see her in the Cape May Rips Afish!
Brian stop and say hi the next time you go by.
Pax, I am thinking of a boat name change to "Miss Print" or something after my lovely bride as I am a printer, my wife is very understanding, and right now my daughter Victoria is left out of the boat name (Son Brennan and daughter Faith). On the other hand, it has been the "handle" I am known for so I may just keep the name.
Happy, I did get her out fishing with the boy last week. He nailed a million perch on her..

Any other thoughts on color or electronics?

Congrats man. Beatiful boat with classic lines.

I'd recommend the 420x series Garmin though. After using a 3210 quite a bit and going to the 4208, I highly recommend the newer generation. There seem to be some pretty good deals out there on 42xx bundles as well.

Just the non-smudge screens are a huge improvement, but the displays and functions are really a nice step up.

Buying a boat is never a rational decision over the alternatives, but sure would be fun to have a new one built. Looking forward to the build pics.

Congrats B! I knew it would happen. I have the same color enclosures as in the picture. I have a red boot stripe and decided to place the boat name under the side windows. I preferred either the back of the boat (the engine blocks the view) or on the bow (the flare of the bow doesn't show the name well). The downside to red enclosures is that people can spot me for miles away! Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. Keep us informed and bring on the photos!
Welcome to the family!

SWEET!!! I knew it was only a matter of time.

Anyway, here's my inputs on the questions you asked:

1. Black trim and I still think white canvas would look best...even if you have to clean it a bit more often. Regardless of what color canvas you choose, make sure the clear sections are placed so they line up with the top and bottom edges of the windows, and have the corners radiused to match the windows as well. I would also have the clear sections run the full lenght of the canvas so you get better visibility. IMHO, it'll look much better than the pic you posted.

2. Can't help you with the electornics, I hardly know how to use the one that I have.

3. Never had a windlass, so I can't help you there either.

4. Haters? I thought you only had one.

CONGRATS - I'm one of those that also KNEW this was gonna' happen for you!

1. I've always liked a "black/white(hull)/red or burgundy" bootstripe combo (bottom to top)! If you're doing bottom paint in black, leave a white "space" on the hull, then do the red or burgundy above the "space" - maybe even 1 narrow, "space", and one wider one. I would work with different "spacing" and "widths" of the colors to see what looks best - close up and from a distance. I've also seen a 32 or 35 Bert (white hull w/black bottom paint) done with black/white/GOLD bootstripe that was BEAUTIFUL! Now, if the Admiral is "set" on green or blue, I'd prefer blue - bootstripe combo and canvas.

2. Sorry - I am "electronically handicapped"!

3. DITTO

4. With that big 'ole motor on a bracket, about the only way to SEE the name would be to scruntch it up on ONE SIDE of the transom - not too cool, IMHO. I'd do like someone else suggested and put it on the sides of the cabin - just below the windows. Not too distracting there (if you keep the "size" right) and doesn't take away from the beauty of the HULL sides! The bow rail supports aren't too large to make the name unreadable, either. Take plenty of time to decide on the right FONT, too!

Keep us posted on the project - and CONGRATS, again - know how you've been wanting this!

Regards,

Greg,

Congrats! That is awesome. Love to see the boat. Since you are close to Jim at BOE, may be worth while to go see the electronics and talk to him a little.

I do like the black accent color....classic and looks good.

Looking forward to your build thread.

I will be seeing Jim at http://www.BOEmarine.com ! ... GREAT guy! He has done all the stuff on mine and my fathers boat.

Here is the Green accent on an older eastern by Judge (their old molds) with the green

Here is a new 27 awaiting power in the shop with black

Here is a newer one with Blue outside the shop this past spring

I am also leaning towards the hull side for the name:

Wow, congrats on the new boat, I'm jealous. All white hull with a true navy blue (almost black) canvas and boot stripe would look sweet. A boot stripe in a wider stripe and narrow pin strip over it, yeah.... As for the name, Kinda like the way the Lady D is set up toward the transom, and the reg #'s on the side of the pilothouse under the side window farther back toward the canvas. But this is just one persons opinion....

Something like this maybe
