Thanks for all the kind words. i have to have a swim platform as my kids swim the bay all the time. By aug you have to find the right coves.
Spooled, i spoke with Old Hat about his day on the Judge before taking the plung. I was glad to get his unbiased opinions as a non Judge owner who spent some time in a decent chop on the bay.
SeaCat. With the low deadrise all composte Judge i believe they get rigged with a 4 blade 17" prop. I am told that the best mpgs are 24-25mph buring just under 8gph. I should get over 3 mpg at an easy cruise and close to 3 mpg if i push the cruise up to just under 30mph. Of course these are calm water numbers. I am also told that with a light load she will tickle 40mph but with heavy load top out at 36-38mph.

that's pretty impressive for a 27 ft single engine boat
Re: Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...
Despite the 27 designation, Its LOA is 26"4" , with an 8'10" beam and mod V "warped plane hull" . It competes better with the 25 Parker than the 28. The shallow deadrise and all composite construction allow for its economy. We will see if I get those numbers or at least close. The Honda is said to burn nearly a full gal per hour less than the 250 zuke at 25mph.

B-,
Congrats on the new boat! Love the layout, esp the tackle station. You'll appreciate the Honda---loved mine, absolutely reliable and confidence building. Take the time to get it propped just right--it will pay off in fuel burn and performance.
Owned a Garmin 3210, loved the cartography, good navigation features, relatively quick processor. FF was only Ok, but a nice unit. Have a Ray C-120 now (came with boat)--miss the garmin chartplotter a lot. Test drove a 4212, loved the crisp display; really want one. BOE has quite a sale going.
You were poling the forum on boat name on sides v cabin. Sides are pretty traditional for an o/b and look good IMHO. If you are going over to BOE, you might stop by Accent Graphics in Eastport and talk to Marilyn. You may do this stuff yourself, but she is real good at getting the scale right and messing with fonts, etc. Many good ideas. Worth a visit; they've done all my boats for years. Good to have her do the install, esp if you are doing tricky stuff like drop-shadow letters.
It's a swell boat--look forward to seeing it on the water!

You know you're finances.......If you can swing it then go fo it!!!! Life is way short!!! Congrats on the sale of the Maycraft, and the purchase of your new craft
Re: Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...
Richie (&us), motor has been ordered already. I am just going with the standard 25" as I am also getting a full swim platform on the boat with the bracket and dont want it too high out of the water. I didnt have any problems with water around my powerhead on the Maycraft so with the similar hull shape of the Judge I hope not to as well. If It was an issue I am sure Judge would have corrected as Bill Judge tests his boats a lot. He has really worked on engine height and props. I think the boats come with a 4 blade SS prop.
Alloy, I dont think I would want twins on the boat. My father has twin 130's on his 27 Judge Downeast and I personally think a single allows the boat to naturally run more level without all that weight off the back. Being that the hull has a 45 degree entry and shallow deadrise, running level allows the hull to work through the chop much better. The boat cruises nicely in the mid to upper 20's with a single 225 and I am not and offshore guy like my father so a single makes more sense to me.
Hull was to be popped from the mold yesterday (as it was laid up last week) and Ellaine at Judge said she ordered the 225 Honda, the armstrong bracket with swim platform, and trailer. Hopefully I can get Bill Judge to email me photos of the hull, cap and liner when they all have been pulled..
Re: Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...
red bottom w/ gold boot is NICE! throw in the navy canvas/accents and you'll be classically sweet! you could even go with the green canavs/accents with the red/gold combo.
my bottom is red and i was worried about the bay muck getting it all nasty. it's been wet-slipped since we got her in mid-june and the water line still looks pretty good. although, i'm hoping to get a life installed this fall.
Re: Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...
Ok... Color has been chosen. Navy blue canvas and boot stripe with royal blue bottom. It looks fantastic on Cabo's with a bright white hull (It is the way Cabo traditionally does a lot of their boats) so I hope it looks good on the judge with a bright white hull. I will do the name in navy with slight drop shaddow in a blue that goes well with the bottom paint.
Now electronics. I am down to two... I am down to the Garmin 3210c with the new digital gsd22 sounder box and the Lowrance LCX-113C HD . I was all set on the garmin but am being teased by the lowrance due to ability to hook up the unit to the LMF200 for full fuel readings. I also know that that the lowrance probably still has a slighly better fishfinder than garmin despite it coming a long way with their new digital gsd22 (I previously ran a gsd20). However I still think the Garmin potter is a lot better. The lowrance does offer higher resolution but adding radar in the future is a lot more expensive with the lowrance. I have also ready of poor service from lowrance but not sure if they are isolated problems. The cost difference after the rebate is minimal as I would go with the more accurate flo scan fuel meter if I go garmin and do without all the mpgs already calculated etc.
It would be cool to go with the new Garmin 4210 but it isnt worth the extra $600+ for features that I find not necessary for fishing and really slows the unit down... Just my opinion. Besides I am trying to pay cash for the boat with the high rate on loans so trying to really ask myself what is important. I want a good chart plotter with a good sounder that I can add radar to in the future. Fuel functions would be nice..
Re: Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...
All the guages etc have already been ordered and it is like a 1200 more for the digital gauges They are near 6oo ea through boats.net and I am not sure that includes the wiring harnesses. I am primarily a slow troller who typically burned less than 20 gal per trip with my OptiMax. I am putting that gauge money towards other options like ql tabs, dinnette, etc that mean a lot more. Besides if I wanted to throw another grand at it I would be talking furuno electronics before engine gauges
Re: Here comes the Judge! --- 27 Chesapeake that is...
I am having a serious drooling problem following your boat build. So much in fact that I have asked the local dealer to call me when a 27 arrives in his yard. He already faxed me the equipment list. You wouldn't have any cabin pics by chance would you? I have been unable to find any.

Everytime this "Judge" story pops up I really wanna get into the printing business! I paid cash for my rig but 20K is nothing compared to this... hootchie mama! You are truly blessed. I hope I see it off OC or in my mid-bay haunts. Exciting continuing saga, good luck.
Dave :-)

P.S. (not to hijack thread) Hey Mist-Rest, one of my favorite vacations was at Moosehead Lake in Greenville. Is that B-52 crash site still open to the public? That was an eerie and hallowed place.

It most certainly is and the Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club have a ride and place a wreath on the site every winter. That area of Elephant Mountain will never be logged in memory of those who died. I think there are still two survivors who have also returned to the site.
Now about those cabin pictures...

dpowell, remember I just sold a boat so I am just trying to pay cash for the difference in values as I owned the Maycraft that I originally financed the first few years before I was able to pay off. Printing industry is a tough competitive market. I am already over budget so that is why the electronic choices. If I had deep pockets I would throw the latest and greatest on without issue. However I dont so I will wait for radar, pick a unit that has an adequate finder and plotter.
