Single season vs multi season ablative bottom paint experiences
Just had my bay boat bottom really cleaned (pressure washed & light sanding) after 4 seasons oftouching up the original multiseason paint. Didn't even know there was such a thing as single season ablative paint, decided to give it a try. Dunno whether it was the 'smoothing out' it got, or the paint is harderor what, but it picked up 300 rpm and 1 or 2 mph... Just wondering what other folks experienced that tried it. How did it hold up? Does it repel growth as well?
Re: Single season vs multi season ablative bottom paint experiences
I got 4-5 seasons on my old boat with Micron CSC. I did have some slime on areas below the waterline, but no hard growth. I would periodically take it down to a sandy beach spot on the ICW and scub the bottom with a brush to get the slime off and re-expose the paint. Never had any problems using this method.
I would rather get several seasons out of a painting, than having to haul and repaint every year.
Re: Single season vs multi season ablative bottom paint experiences
I have been using multi season ablative since 1986, so I am aware of the multi season 'advantages' over a single season. In my experience, when they took the copper out of the original CSC Micron, it lost about 50% of it's ability to do the job. Oh well...
What I am hoping happens with the single season stuff is that a fresh coat would stay cleaner for the season, and most of it wears away in that single season.

What brand of single season did you use?.......I tried Petit Vivid which is supposed to be a "hard" ablative after having my botom stripped and barrier coated. I thought it would be the best of both world's but it fouled...not sure if it was stirred properly......or possibly we had an unusual year on the Chesapeake.......

Vivid is what I've been using, I wasn't overly impressed with it either. Seems it gets more growth than the Interlux (not speaking of barnacles), I pulled and pressure washed or brushed every 6-8 weeks. I am using an Interlux product this time.

Elusive.....how many coats of Micron Exztra did you have on your boat?.......I'm going back to Interlux......probably Micron Extra again.........Have you ever used/know A&M Marine on Kent Island...they are next to Whalertowne?
Just curious...may have them do some cosmetic work.......and possibly the bottom.....
Re: Single season vs multi season ablative bottom paint experiences
I used vivid on my new in 2005 Whitewater 28. It lasted 2 seasons with no work and a light application last season. Boat is in the water from May till December and I have put over 1000hrs on her - many at over 40mph. I think it has been good because its a decent paint but also because the the builder applied it properly when new. I get no growth.
Re: Single season vs multi season ablative bottom paint experiences
I had used a single-season ablative, whatever the cheapest West Marine bottom paint they had and never had any issue with any growth in almost 20 years of using it.
I am on my 2nd season with Petit Vivid and did not touch up anything after last season and I had kept my boat on the trailer from October till May, but did use the boat once every month this past winter, so far, no growth of any kind.
Here is a pic from a couple of weeks ago when I pulled the boat to change the oil;
A light brushing and both the scumline was gone and the paint bright white.
