I owned a 38 henriques with the side exhaust and also became tired of scrubbing the sides after every trip. I second the krazy clean that's what I used and it worked well. I also stopped waxing the sides which made a world of difference. The soot would stick to the wax and make it twice as hard to clean

Its not "glamorous" or "high tech" but damn it works and is the easiest. Trust me

several people have asked - said unable to find it. I bought it at Boater's world, and I made a mistake it is Krazy Clean not Krazy Kleen and it is made by MDR. It is in the on line catalog for Boater's World and on the MDR website. Is is also biodegradable (I did not know) so maybe it is not as harsh as I thought, but it will remove wax. It also works great on non-skid (careful, slippery while it is on the deck) then I use Woody Wax. It is one the best boat cleaning products I have ever used.
