I say again, call or email Strickland Marine. Lee Strickland is a great guy, local boater. They insure in Fl. using Travelers I believe. I paid $1200 per year on $120,000. Here is some helpful info they posted. Great Guys!!!
One problem with boats is the HO companies generally don't have the same agreed-value, boat or yacht form policies as marine carriers. Some companies do give some premium credit for having the boat too, but we usually beat their premium even with the credit. One guy came to me with his policy and said his agent told him it was "replacement cost". I read him the policy, which stated in clear, and no uncertain terms that it was an ACV policy (actual cash value--the lowest form of insurance). We beat his premium even though our policy was a vastly-superior Agreed Value with Replacement Cost on the engines, and even with all the HO credits he had with the other company. Marine carriers also provide optional coverage for things like fishing equipment, fuel spillage, etc. The offshore limit with Progressive is another example of something that could catch you by surprise if you insure your boat with a company or agent that doesn't KNOW boats and boat insurance. Progressive isn't a HO company, but it is a "Personal Lines" company (basically an automobile insurance company)--very similar. The people you talk to at Progressive (who knows where they actually are??), don't know squat about boats. You need someone who does. Boats are not the same as cars and houses in the insurance world, and are not even subject to the same laws. The agent really needs to KNOW boats and boat policies--know what he's talking about, know what you're going to be doing with the boat, know what a "Donzi 35 ZF" IS. Who would insure a 28-foot Grady White in Charleston and put a 50-mile offshore limit on it? Obviously, someone who didn't know what it was. HO companies and agents do a small fraction of their business with boats, especially offshore boats, and they are just a small sideline. It's not what they eat, sleep, and drink all day. A marine-specific agent can save you some unexpected trouble and surprises. Marine insurance is a specialty field. We have been specializing specifically in marine insurance since 1986 and Dad's been in the general insurance business for 40-something years. If you just have a small john boat or something very small, of very little value, then your HO company is a viable and good option. Boats with length and engine under a certain nominal size and horsepower are included by default.
GEICO is underwritten through Ski Safe, and the policy is X-WIND.
