Default Counter rotating outboard

I have found a good deal on a Yamaha 250 ox66 but it is counter rotating. For a single installation is there any downside other than perhaps more expensive props and or more expensive lower unit repair?

Thanks,

Tim

It will make no difference in the boat and how it runs.

However, the lower unit will not last as long as the standard rotation will. Something about the torque from the gear putting more load on the rear carrier. The standard rotation puts the gear torque on the front bearings and only puts force on the carrier when in reverse. I had an Evinrude dealer tell me they see the counter rotating lower units wear out about 30% faster.

No difference - I've had one one my bay boat for almost 1700 hours. As for longevity - no evidence that the "counter" rotating engine dies faster, or has more problems than the "typical" motor in twins, based on my dealer. It does reduce the easy availability of props, but once you've got one, it is no big deal. Right shaft length and price, buy it.

I had the exact motor your looking at on a 22 Grady, bought it used, put 400 hours on it before I sold the boat with it without a hitch. I found the prop on ebay.it was less expensive than a right hand rotqtion prop (not as much demand). Go for it.

Good decision. Change the lower unit oil 2X per year, the counter gear case typically holds a little less oil then the standard so it should be changed a little more often.

I have the 225 OX66 in counter-rotation. I had no idea until I read what all the letters meant on the model#. No problems so far. Sounds like a good deal.

Ran an 150hp OX66 counter-rotation single for 10 years and 2000 hours, no issues.

How good of a deal? I have a 2001 OX66 with 720 hours that runs great that I am about to pull (blew the other powerhead). It's the Cr, but could put the RH rotation lower unit on. PM me - My offers aren't what I as a seller would call a great deal!

Thanks for the input - that is what i was hoping to hear.

gap4040 - It is definitely a buyers market now. This is what is getting me into trouble as I keep running into great deals and just can't resist - even things I don't really need but just want. If this keeps up I will have a complete quiver of boats and no wife!

Cheers,

Tim
