Default Older Johnson 60 hp question

I just bought an older 60 hp Johnson with electric shift. Generally, are there any problems with the electric shift? Where is the serial number located on this motor? Thanks, Sea-r-cy

I understand that there are some things to be aware of with the electric shift, but not necessarily problems. You should be able to pull up more info than you want to read about them by searching the Internet. There are a couple of forums for older outboards that should be able to give you answers to your questions.

Is it a straight 3 cylinder? If so, around 1969-70. If it's a V4, much older and a different electric shift design. On the 3, be sure to change the gearcase lube with a product designated OMC Type C. Is the shift working now?

j-d, I was under the impression that the V4 electramatic shift for Evinrude and Johnsons started being available around
1968 and was available for the 85 and 100 hp models. For that year the smaller V4 engine was the 65 hp and electric
shift was not available but a bigfoot for houseboats was an option. Also in 1968 the 3 cylinder 55 hp engine made its
debut and also had electric shift as standard as I recall.

I agree though that if it is a 60 hp electric shift it would be the 3 cylinder and would be about 1969 to 1970 because
shortly after this it was bumped up again to the 70 hp model.

The only 60hp motors with electric shift were the 70-71 years and they were the 3 cylinder motors. All the other 60's of any year were mechanical shift. The 70-71 engines had an electric-hydraulic shift mechanism, it was not the electramatic shift of the 1960's.
