Default Evinrude DFI 250 Fuel Problem

I am having a problem getting fuel to this engine. When I first start out it will run fine for about 20-30 minutes. Then all of a sudden it will die down completely. I pump the ball till it gets hard again and it will start up but now only run for 5 minutes or so and then I have to pump the ball to get it started, it will then continue to do this every few minutes if I break 1500 RPM. I have replaced the fuel lines, fuel filter/water separator, primer ball, drained the tank to make sure I had not been bitten by the Ethanol bug, and checked the fuel pickup in the tank. I am starting to think maybe the fuel pump is going bad and not able to keep up with the demand from the engine when it is over 1500 RPM or so.

Any ideas?

Your engine has a fuel lift pump that supplies fuel to the electric pump,if you have a pressure gauge you can check pressure at lift pump.I know I have replaced several of these pumps, you can eliminate the boat by hooking a 6 allon tank to engine.

Good idea. I will try that tomorrow.

Any idea what the pressure should be coming off the lift pump?

The lift pumps almost never fail, that said, they're cheap and take 2 minutes to replace. Almost faster than testing the pressure and good piece of mind. I changed mine this year when I was having a similar problem. I ended up having a crack in the fuel pickup on top of the fuel tank that was causing the motor to suck air at high rpm. The 6 gallon gas tank test is the best thing you can do

A lift pump for a di evinrude is around 350.00 dollars,I don't think that is very cheap and they did have some bulletins on the earlier motors for this problem.

I am going to do the gas tank test and we will see what I get.

I agree with riverrat78, the pumps are not cheap. That is why i want to make sure I am changing the right part. Cape Horn is sending me 2 new fuel pickups one for each tank, and at no cost to me I might add. There customer service is second to none. The only reason i think it may be at the engine is because the odds of this problem happening on both tanks at the same time are pretty low.

I had a fuel delivery/starting problem with my 2002 200 hp DI Evinrude. It only happened when air and water temp were very high.
I took out the anti-syphon valve and it helped a lot.

Fuel tank vent in good shape, not obstructed?

Skip - no longer has anti-syphon... that was the first thing I got rid of.

Whaler - vents on both tanks are clear. That was the first thought by the guys at Cape Horn so those are ruled out at this point.

My 250's are doing something similar! I just replaced the primer bulbs, and fuel filters yesterday. Then I blew some compressed air up the fuel lines. It probably wasn't the right thing to do, but I did it. I then added some startron to the fuel tank.

Headed offshore tomorrow so I hope it's fixed. Thanks,

Good idea. I will try that tomorrow.

Any idea what the pressure should be coming off the lift pump?
Minimum of 4 psi at idle speed with the gauge inserted at the inlet fitting on the fuel filter housing. For this test you need to make sure there are no restrictions or air leaks in the fuel system leading up to engine so your best bet is to try the separate fuel tank first.

I tried the separate tank and she ran like a raped ape!!! Well that narrows it down. Guess i will just wait for the new fuel pickup from Cape Horn coming Monday.

Heck I just noticed your in Palm Harbor, take the boat to Mike at American Marine in Tarpon he can fix anything - he used to know Ole Evinrude himself. OK just kidding about Ole but Mike hasn't seen a Rude problem he can't figure out, 30+ yrs will do that - tell him I sent you 727 938 9796. If your a customer you can ask him for his cell and he will tell you how to fix your boat at the North Bar if it breaks - sweet.
He actually has done that twice for me when I was at least 50 miles away on a weekend getaway thing, good guy.

Well after receiving new fuel pickups from Cape Horn the problem is fixed! Thanks to all who responded on here and helped me save $350 by not just replacing a fuel pump I did not need.

I have to say I love this boat! The ride is awesome compared to my last boat (1990 22' Offshore) and the boat is built like a tank. Also I am now a Cape Horn owner for life thanks to their awesome customer service.
