Default Yanmar Diesel Advice for Survey

Gentlemen,

I'm working on finding a Yanmar technician to survey the engines on the boat in which I'm interested.* The engines are 4LHAM-STP's rated at 230HP each.* The boat is a 1999, and the motors have 350 hours on them.* I am not at all familiar with diesel inboards.* What should I ask?* What should I look for?

Thanks,

Paul

Default RE: Yanmar Diesel Advice for Survey

Paul,
I just purchased a boat w/ low hour (90hr) 2001 twin 4LHA-STE (230 hp) yanmars. Even w/ the low hours I had a certified yanmar mechanic perform a survey. First things I suggest is join boatdiesel.com. Second is go to the yanmar website, find out who the regional distributor is, and contacting them to find a certified Yanmar mechanic in your area. A dedicated engine survey should be fairly extensive and include checks of boost pressure and compression. There are things you and/or hull surveyor can check and they would include a complete visual inspection; general condition of engines including paint and/or visual corrosion, evidence of leaking at gasket locations, heat exchangers, etc. Boatdesiel.com has a complete listing of visual inspection items. Also can look at running temperature, oil pressure and WOT Rpm’s. Yanmar spec’s WOT at 3300RPM. If boat can not get to at least 3300RPM, look for problems including over propping.

What kind of boat are those yanmarsin?

Pete
