Random Quote: Vegetarian, Indian term for a bad fisherman
my fuel gauge stop working. i have about 12 gals of fuel in it. i can lift a deck cap and see the tank. it has a small fuel line, with a fitting on one end screw to the top of the tank.in a different spot there is a round looking cap with 4 screws in it with a couple of wires coming out of it.i could not see anything loose or see or smell any gas leaks. so i know it should show at least half a tank of fuel. any tips ? thanks, ed.( sea pro c.c.)
If it simply stoped then you most likely have a ground issue ... you can check if the sending unit (one with wires ) ... is working ... but you have to get it out ... start with the wires and check all the connection's ...ground's ...Go to Tele-Flex web site and you will find a wireing Dia and it will help ... also consider running wires above the deck to see if you can get a reading if thet solves the issue ...simply mark and pull useing the old wires....Good Luck.....John
If it is one of those useless float arm sending units it may have a 'dead' spot. Why are such unreliable devices regularly installed in boats? How often does an automotive guage fail? I've one fail in 35 years of vehicle ownership. At least 5 fail in 22 years of boat ownership.
Get yourself a wiring diagram and start tracing, it's really the only way. It's a very basic circuit, you shouldn't have any trouble at all. But if you have doubts, just ask away because the guys on this site will be happy to walk you through it.
Disconnect the 2 wires coming from the sender and connect them together. Turn the key to "ON". If the gauge pegs beyond full, then you have a bad sender. If the gauge is still stuck, go to the back of the gauge and ground out the "S" terminal. If still no change verify you have a good ground and bat+ going to the gauge. If still no good, replace the gauge.

IS THERE ANOTHER OPTION TO THE FLOAT STYLE? I'VE REPLACE 2 ON MY BOAT..AND YOUR RIGHT EVEN WHEN NEW THEY SEEM UNRELIABLE
Fuel gauge on boats, never seen an acurate one. Do yourself a favor and spend $150 bucks and get a NavMan. Best move I ever made. Specially when you are pushing it with offshore trips.

Look at THESE. All the new boats that we sell have them factory installed. No Failures yet. (No float arms either!)

I must be missing something on the site....$...do I have to go to the boat show to get them just kidding. I did'nt see any pricing, though I guess I will have to e-mail them and get a price quote if they will sell to individuals.
Rickster: You mention you're using the Navman. What size engine? I'm looking at the Navman 2100 but minimum registering rate is 1.3gph and Yam performance bulletin for my boat/engine(scout 175/f100) is 0.7 gph at 2,000 rpm. I like to troll at/around this speed/rpm and wonder if it's worth the $ if not 100% accurate. Thanks and forgive me if I should've started my own post.

Click on the "Shopping Cart" , then click the model sender you want on the left and it will take you to an order form.
My fuel guage hasn't been accurate for a long time now. It's off about a half tank off at all times. When full it reads 1/2 tank. When 1/2 tank it reads empty. Even though I know this it makes me nervous when far from home and my tank is reading empty.
I just replaced mine and it's the one that is on the link provided by Lakensea. Mine was covered by my warranty and the dealer said that might be the first one of that style sender that they have seen go bad. I know a couple other mechanics and they all agree that shaft style (like the one below) is that most dependable.
savgeorge,
I have a 225 Yamaha and my buddy runs two with his 150 Suzuki's. I do a lot of trolling both slow trolling for Rockfish and offshore trolling and the NavMan always seems to be dead on for me/my buddy. It claims that if not calibrated it could be up to 5% off from the factory. I never calibrated mine nor did my friend and it seems to work great for both of us. Maybe call the company and ask your very question or check into the Flow-scan (course this unit is twice the price).
I replaced mine with a Gaffrig/Livorsi sending unit. It uses two concentric tubes with no moving parts. Measures resistance/capacitance between tubes for readings. The longer models require 12V+, but shorter model use the standard 2 wire connection. Unit has 2 adjustable trim pots on top to customize to your guage.
Rickster: Thanks your reply. Guess I was hoping to hear that the unit would register below 1.3 gph. Thought maybe it was just that Navman would not warrant accuracy below that rate. They did in fact reply to my question in the meantime but it was really just a disclaimer of accuracy below stated specs. I'll probably get it anyway, hope for the best and do the math if not. Truth is Jan/Feb are dangerous times: I piddle with the trailered boat in my driveway with a garage 'fridge full o' beer and "accesorize" with things I could otherwise do without.
