13 months after I bought Infinity 6x9's, I found one of the magnets in my bilge.

Not the old Infinitys of past days.

The Pioneers are the best money spent on marine speakers. Etronics.com has incredible pricing on them. 8" for under $100 a pair.

Other speakers are great but triple the price.

JL Audio M650-CCX 224.00 + Shipping

(not 6.5, it is a 7 inch speaker) Alpine Marine SPR-M700 179.99 + Shipping

I think those are two of the best marine speaker options if you don't want to go with an amp. I have the Alpine 7" speakers and Alpine car receiver in our boat and it sounds awesome. It is the best setup for the price... period. I had the Pioneer 8" speakers in our old boat and the Alpine blows them away in the high and low frequencies. If you don't believe that, anybody in the area is welcome to listen. Alpine underrates everything they sell which is a complete opposite from all the other companies. If you want to get an amp, I would go with a component system from JL. I use a car receiver because marine mp3 receivers were not very common a year ago and it is hard to find marine cd receivers that are as powerful as car receivers without paying a ton of extra money. I have had marine receivers and they never seemed to last much longer than a car receiver. The circuit boards on a marine cd player are sprayed with a silicone to keep water off the board, but it usually doesn't keep water off all the circuits that can short out. I also have an Ipod controller receiver so I can control everything from the cd player and leave the ipod in the console.

This is strictly a personal preference, but I can't stand the bass response on 6x9's.

Pioneer marine 6 or 8s are very efficient without an extra amp and sound good and last (4 years so far) . 2 boatsv with 4 each.. I did not choose the install , but have replaced the head units in both...and raves fro others when the fish are not biting. It may be the beer since I do not bi-amp or subwoof ,but I have 2 $10 k sound systems in my home and a pretty critical ear so I know what is good,.. but I will replace a set with JLs when on sale just too see.
At the end of the day themm usic is ore iportant than the gear
