Default VHF- NMEA 0183 Version Format

I just bought a new VHF radio (Uniden 525) and I want to hook it up to my GPS to take advantage of all of the VHF's features. However, I found out that the the VHF is NMEA version 3.01 and the GPS is on version 2.0. After contacting Lowrance about the GPS they do not have an upgrade out yet nor do they offer any GPS that is compatible. Does any know what limitations this may have?
