Default 38 Ocean vs. 38 Luhrs

I was directed to this site by my father’s mechanic. I am looking to move up from my current 29’ CC to a Convertible Sport Fish. Two of the boats that are in my price range are the 38 Ocean SS and the 380 Luhrs. Here are my needs….. 40% fishing and 60% pleasure. I am self-employed so I can and will pick my days to go offshore. The two oceans that I looked at are late 80’s and powered by 400hp DD and the Luhrs was an early 90’s with 485 DD. Any inpute by anyone who has owned one of these boats would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've got a 38' Ocean, late 80's with Cat 375 TAs Live on the water and boat behind the house. Great boat, great for fishing and pleasure. Very comfortable, lots of room, and easy engine access. Cruise 2350 rpms at 21 knots, burns 25-26 gph. Tops out 26-27 knots. Fairly good in sloppy seas if you pull it back. Will own a larger one on down the road. Nice looking on top of that. Have done all updates, new garmin networking systems, etc. Have been real pleased.

A couple of months ago, I looked at a 38' Ocean in CT, almost to the NY border, with a friend who had some interest. It was shrink-wrapped when we saw it, but from what we could see, it's in real nice condition both inside and outside and the engines have already been majored. The salon had recently been updated and shows really well. The owner seemed ready to sell and suggested that he was looking for an offer from my friend who is still not ready to pull the trigger.

Thanks for the quick responses. Is the boat still for sale? I live in jersey and I could make the trip to see it.

It is listed with Taber and this is how we got to see it. Oh, wait a minute, I don't think that I can post the URL here so I'll send you a PM.

I have a 2004 Luhrs 38 Open with 500 HP Yanmar's (6CXM-GTE2). I love the boat. I've had an issue with the shafts, and I'll be providing a description in an upcoming post. You shouldn't have a problem with the 485's.

Hi ,
My friend fd himself in the same dilemma as yourself and went with the Luhrs 38 conv..
He has owned at least ten boats in this size category and felt it was three times the boat as the Ocean . His boat is a mid 90s model and is equipped with Yanmars. I own an Albemarle sportfish and can tell you this boat is all business. The boat is for sale . It can be fd on Yacht World. It's in Boston and it's being represented by Norwood Yacht Sales. I spoke with the owner (Paul) regarding your post and you are free to call him for advice whether your interested in his boat or not. Paul has forgotten more about boats then most will ever know.
