Alright, I called the DMV HQ and they said you DO have to have plates on your boat trailer IF you leave the state. That sucks. Its 87 bones and is a one time fee. Basically, your at the mercy of the other states if you get stopped without it.
I'm a Alabama resident and was stopped in N.J. for not having a license plate on my boat trailer. The officer was confused, so he called the Sergeant. The Sergeant said that if it's legal in Alabama, it's legal in N.J. for 30 days.

Yep, I had to buy plates to move my trailer from MD to SC because I let the MD plates expire.
Of course, in most other states you have to renew the plates just like the ones for your car so in the long run the "permanent" plate in SC is cheaper.

Exactly! Home court rules! It's happened 3 times w/ 2 different boats in Ohio. Wisconsin law, less than 3,200# no liscence req'd.
I guess it does pay to do some research if you're traveling though.

I need to update my friend that owns a house in both NC and SC. He has always listed his primary residence in SC (drivers liscense) and his boat and trailer and never had a tag on it while he was basically keeping his boat here in NC and towing it all over NC roads without a plate for a number of years.
Also, his boat had SC registration.
Maybe he is just lucky, but I think this has been going on for more than ten years.
????????

By all means, the consensus is that on the whole most cops seem to apply common sense if they pull you over, but the LAW is that you need the permanent plate out of state (thats why they sell them). I first heard this on the radio from a DNR person who did not know when a caller called in with the question, but she called the SC DMV and said its required. I then called the DMV in Columbia, main branch, and they confirmed it as well. I think you pobably could go years without a problem, (i have ) but at some point a 500$ ticket or a court date in some backwater town is a possibility. A couple of posters have indicated that it happenend to them. Better safe than sorry, especially with my luck.
I just got the permanent tag for my boat trailer,it is a FULL size tag,I thought that it would be a smaller tag like a motor cycle tag. It is really cumbersome to mount and stupid looking on a flats boat trailer!

Most trailers have a place to mount a tag. Your's doesn't ?
