Default How much does your trailer weigh?

Looking for a comparison to try to figure out how much trailer weighs. It is a 2 axel aluminum trailer with disk brakes and bunks for a 21 w/a boat.

Boat weight = 2500lbs
Motor weight = 470 lbs
80 gallons fuel = 450 lbs
Gear = 350 lbs
Trailer = ????????

TOTAL tow weight = 3770 lbs + trailer weight.

Hard to figure out the correct tongue weight of I don't know the weight of the whole setup.

From my trailer:

Dual axle, drum brakes, galvanized roller trailer for a 21' wac is 1,250 lbs. At least that is what the manufacturer states.

Why guess? Take it to a truck weighing facility and find out for sure!

State run weigh stations along highways, agriculture weighing facilities, interstate truck stops... There should be something near you.

Default How much does your trailer weigh?

Thanks for the input. I'll weigh it next time I get it on the interstate.

But for now, I'll assume 1000 lbs trailer.

With a full tank of gas and no other gear ,that puts the weight at 4500 lbs.

Implications:
The trailer GVWR is 5400 lbs, I have enough capacity for 900 lbs of gear while towing and should have a tongue weight of around 500 lbs.
Wife's 4 runner ahs a towing capacity of 5000 lbs, so we should be OK tow behind her vehicle if we don't have more than 500 lbs of gear/beer.

Thanks everyone this is - exactly what I wanted to figure out!

Believe my 6000# tandem is about 800#. Quite a bit lighter than my old galv roller trailer.

I bet you'll be over 5,000 lbs, at least a little.
Boat 2500 lbs
Motor 470 lbs
80 g gas x 6.25lbs/per gal = 500 lbs
standard trailer for a 20' (from Trophy's web site) 1,250 lbs
Without any gear at all, you are already up to 4720, and that's assuming no gear, no water, and the hull didn't weigh anything over the published weight.

Galvanized roller trailer by "Long Trailers" of Tarboro, NC. Three sets of rockers, dual axle, disk brakes on both axles, 15" wheels with galvanized rims.

I had to call the factory two years ago to get a replacement U-Bolt that I could not find anywhere else. At the time I asked if they knew how much the things weighted. Indeed they did, after all they were shipping them. It weighted 1,850 pounds according to the nice lady on the phone.

I also had my boat weighed on a certified scale but it was still attached to the truck. The trailer was on the scale platform, the truck was not, so simply add 10% for tongue weight if you like. The weight slip came to 6,620 pounds. The boat was almost empty of fuel, had no gear or ice on it, and the water tank was empty (this was done at a rock crushing plant on the ride home from one of my spring try-out runs in the local lake). So add 660 pounds and you come up with 7200 pounds empty on the highway, fill it with fuel and you're up to 8,000 pounds. Put in bait, ice, and tackle and as we back down the ramp to launch you can easily figure that there is 8,500 pounds hitting the pavement.

An aluminum trailer will be a little lighter, but I picked the trailer from a 20' boat, so your trailer will be a little bigger than that so there won't be much difference there. Teh weight of the gasoline is based on 72 degrees farenheit, as the weight per gallon increases as the temperature decreases.
If a boat is listed at 2500, don't be surprised if it's realistically 3000 lbs dry. I have yet to see anyone who weighed their boat that wasn't surprised at how heavy it actually was compared to what they thought.

Check out www.catscale.com. for the nearest facility to you. They charge about $5. If you are going to use one on the interstate, don't just drive up and expect them to weigh you. Many of the new scales are drive through and you could cause problems. I would suggest driving out w/out your trailer and ask them if it would be possible to get weighed. Also ask what would be a good time. I did it that way and they not only let me weigh but let me drop the trailer to get an accurate boat, motor, trailer weight w/out the Jeep.

A rule of thumb that I have used (and it is a rule of thumb) is to find the dry advertised hull weight and double it. Then add 10%. You'll be pretty close to the actual weight unless you're carrying bricks around with ya.

Try it!

Wow!
An overwhelmingly helpful set of responses.
You guys rock.
I will definately get it weighed properly before pulling it behind the 4 runner. (In the mean time the suburban should still be well within limits).
It seems that many calculated estimates turned out to be well under when finally weighed.
I'll post the true results after weighing if anyone is interested.
Cheers!

Get it weighed and then use the weight that is the lesser amount to buy the tag. It will be cheaper.

My 7000lb capacity Magic Tilt aluminum roller trailer weighs 1080lbs. The title said 895 lbs.

Considering that your trailer is a bunk trailer, I would say that it weighs around 900lbs.

To find the tounge weight do the following.

1. get a 4x4 six feet long and mark it in exactly one foot increments starting from the 0ft end.
2. get a bathroom scale and a concrete block.
3. under the tounge of the boat place the 4x4s 4ft mark directly under tounge.
4. place scale under the 0ft end and the edge of the conrete block exactly on the 5ft mark.
5.Lower the tounge of the trailer exactly on the 4ft mark.
6.Whatever the scale reads multiply it times four and you will have your tounge weight.

Example my boat loaded including trailer 5200lbs.
(scale reading) X 4 = tounge wt
125lbs X 4 = 500lbs
Hopefully it will fall between 7 & 10 Percent.

You will not damage your wifes scale this way!!!! !!! This is on a previous post here at THT
