Default Calling all Yamaha certified Techs

We just picked up a boat with twin F350's on the back. I was asking the salesman about changing the oil and if it can be done while the boat is in the water. He said that he does not recommend it, it sounded like even if I sucked out the oil from the crankcase the oil filter is on the bottom and would make a huge mess on the inside of the bottom cover.

Does anyone have any tricks for the oil changes on these engines? Pulling the boat out of the water is not an option on the trailer since we did not buy one and I would hate to hear how much it is to pull the boat each time the oil and filter and also the fuel filters need to be changed.

Thanks

If it's like the F225 which I think it is, it's on the port side lower front pointing forward. It should make no mess at all, if done right. Put a heavy gallon ziplock bag overthe filter, loosen it slightly, and tilt the engine forward. Remove the filter into the ziplock with it's contents and wipe the area at the mount clean.

It is nothing like a 225. That SOB is buried under the intake. They make a special tool to help with the oil spillage from the filter. I have never used it but you need to have the dealer order it for you. The filter postion is similar to a F250 almost dead center but under everything.

Great sounds like lots of fun. I was quoted our selling dealer the other day that parts and labor to change oil and filter and also fuel filters per engine would be around $180 each engine but he did not say if they needed to haul the boat out to do the work.

Can't address the oil filter on those engines, but I suspect that the lower unit gear oil is supposed to be changed at the same 100-hr interval as the oil and filter. And you need to haul the boat to do those, for sure...

So, you can either change the oil and filter more frequently and the gear lube at the prescribed intervals, or you can change the oil as prescribed and let the gear lube go past the recommended intervals...

Brian

Thanks I totally forgot about the gear oil. Well I guess the boat is getting hauled out around the 100 hour mark more than likely.

Be advised that the F350 uses a special gear oil compared to the other Yamahas and it is not to be used in other models, either.

Anytime you have Yammie questions, there is a great vendor on here - Andy at Shipyard Island Marine (SIM) can give you solid advice. His forum is in the vendor area. He also has some great prices on parts and supplies. I order all my Ringfree and stuff from him.
