I just took my boat out for the first night time ops with my new Abyss underwaterlights. I tried to take some pics but a cheap camera doesn't do themjustice. On my old seacraft I am not able to access the inside of thetransom so I used spacers to hold the lights 3/4" off the transom, thenran the wires up along the same route as the ducer wire. Abysssuggested I fill in the area on the back of the light where the wirecomes out with 4200, and encapsulate the cable with a hose to make itmore durable as it will be exposed on the transom. I took a couplelengths of Bennett trim tab hose and sliced them down the middle andthen put them over the Abyss cables. Then bottom painted the wholemess. It all has worked out well. In my muddy creek the lights go backabout 8'. I am very impressed!
I also included some pics of my under gunwale LED rope lights.

Those are the Abyss S1515. The rope lights can be cut to length, you can use lengths up to about 24'. I think the ones you are referring to are for cars but people use them on boats. You can find these on our site under the Lighting section.

Interested in the rope lights, how much of a bend can you place on a section of light? can I do one run about 15 feet and make a large "U" shape with out cutting? This would start from my starboard side, against the stern, and up the port side, (about a 100 degree corner for each side at the stern) or should I cut and attach as three sections?
Lastly when color is concerned, any reason the red are lower cost than the blue or white? Do you feel Red or Blue is a better color for not loosing night vision?
Hi Nick, I have no idea why the reds are so cheap and blues are so expensive. The blue lights on a white deck are pretty damn bright, definitely will kill your night vision although I think scientifically blue is one of those safe colors for preserving night vision. All I know is when my lights are on in my boat it glows! I think the reds will be much more suitable if you want to preserve night vision. Those bends in the corner are no big deal at all. Rope lights are about as flexible as a 2 gauge or so piece of boat wire. I would keep your lights one continuous strip.

I am speculating here but I heard that the guy that finally invented the blue LED made a fortune because nobody else could figure how to get a blue one - maybe the price of blue light carries his royalties? In terms of night vision - most of the night vision light I see is RED - I believe that the red end of the spectrum carries less energy - some critters supposedly can't even see red light. You might try googling it but I think red is better for preserving night vision than blue.
The blue LEDs in the boat is only for the "cool factor" while at anchor or at the local dockside hangout. Once underway you shut them off at any speed above idle.
