Default Boston Whaler Newport Hulls...

Does anyone know if the 77 newport hull was any good - or rather, was there anything on this particular year/model to look out for?

I assume it is the exact same as the montauk hull.

thanks.

Great Boat, I think it was just a differnt layout but im not sure.

The only diffence between the two in that years Specs is that the Newport Weighs about 50 lbs more than the Montauk for some reason.

I had one and have a montauck. The difference is the newport has a side console and it is a sit down. It is an amazing boat! It wont beat you up and I have been in some BIG stuff with it. Contact me with any other questions. I wish I still had mine.

I've got a 1987. It sure looks the same to me but with the cap. A little less room inside but it's nice to be able to sit on the gunnels. As far if it's a good hull, well....there are lots of opinions about that. I sure like mine (especially when the water is calm).

Abayer got it... Hull is the same

Newport 1975-1990
The Newport was a model intended to please everyone, fisherman, skier, bow rider. It stayed in production for 15 years, so it must have had its fans. A side console with windscreen, mechanical wheel steering and stainless grab rail was attended by a reversible pilot seat with upholstered backrest. In the bow compartment another windshield protected passengers who rode in low, contoured bucket seats. For skiing a tow pylon was available; for fishing a rear casting platform could be added.

Cohasset/Montauk 1973-2000
When the Cohasset was introduced in 1973, it marked the first production use of a molded center console in the Whaler line. (The Outrage 21 that year had one, too.) Next year, 1974, just the name changed, and this model became the Montauk. The boat must have been popular then and ever since, as it is still in production, 26 years later! It was the prototype of the now ubiquitous center-console fiberglass fishing boat, and it is still probably the best in its size. This Whaler is one of the few Classics still available.

i have a 1979 newport, and as much as i love the bigger whalers the newport is a poor hull as is the montauk they are same. dont get me wrong the boat will get you home safe, it will just pound the snot out of you !!! even at 1/3 throttle keeping the bow high in the waves !!!

As a former Montauk owner I agree with the post above. I have moved on to better-riding boats. The reason the Montauk/Newport are valued is that they are light, easy to trailer, efficient, and most of all, unsinkable.
