I headed out through the pass and all of a sudden the engine just totally quit. I had only been running for ~3-4 minutes.
It started right back up, so I turned around and came back. . . was idling along some mangroves looking for fish on the way back to the dock when she quit again. This time, it wouldn't start and when I cranked her, she gave me a buzzing alarm. I waited a while and she finally started. It only alarmed when I tried to start it after it had died.
I flushed the engine really good and took it out the next day. We drove it out into a nice lagoon area. took about five minutes to get there. Anchored there for 45 minutes to an hour. Started the engine, ran for less than 30 seconds at 3400 or so and she quit. Again, wouldn't start and gave me a solid buzzing alarm. Waited about 5 minutes and she started. Made it back to the dock, but it quit as I was idling into the slip. Had to go the last 100 feet coasting.
It could be from ethanol. There's been a lot of talk about this over the last few years. Did you upgrade to the 10 micron filter? Maybe it needs to be cleaned out? Wish I was more help, but I am not great on outboards.
I would recomend that you have a certified mechanic run the YDS software on your motor. It is a easy way to diagnose the problem. I have both my motors checked with the YDS every year cost me $75.00 for both motors....Mark
I had a similar problem with mine last week. It's an 07 and probably has about 30hrs on it. Purchased it in August of last year. I put it up for the winter (winterized it) and went on vacation to the beach with it. That was the first time i had it out in 4 months. It ran fine for about 5 minutes........sputtered a bunch of times and died. I never really got it to crank again though. Just turned over. I am taking it to the Yamaha dealer today and will let you know what they tell me.
its either an overheat or low oil alarm. if your oil level is good, AND youre trimmed down so oil CAN transfer, then its an overheat issue. when it happens unplug one then the other thermosensor to be sure its overheat.
well.......water in the fuel tank.........almost 5 gallons of it.........so not as bad as i thought..........i think i also heard there was a recall on the oil pump.......that could be ure problem
i have a 2005 yamaha hpdi and it runs great with the{what i call crap fuel}but i have lately been using that startron fuel stabilizer.yes, check for water in the fuel?is water separator old?fuel filters on the engine?make sure you check the kill switch on console.mine would act up occasionally{stick} and would stall,i sprayed a little wd-40 down the kill swich's plunger and never had a problem since.sometime it would happen when i either bumped against it or hit a large wave.hey, its worth a try.but if your alarm is on thats probably not it.does the alarm come on before it stalls?
Mine ran on water. The boat was a yard ornament for 4 years. Sets off the alarm, but that's it.
Not bulletproof by any stretch. The impeller only lasted 7 years.
winslow, YES! The fuel filters were a mess. They had never been changed the boat didn't have a fuel/water separator filter. Changed them all out and she runs as good as ever.
