How many of you would be intersted in buying this particular PLB/EPIRP for $450 shipped to anywhere USA. Brand new - ready to be registered. MSRP is $549. (sorry the GPS "plus" model is NOT availble for this group buy)
I need 15 total for this group buy. Who is in?
Sorry for late notice - dead line happens to be Friday 3/28/08 end of business.
For now - I don't need any $$$ yet - I just need your sincere commitment.
Preferred payment method would be Paypal. Otherwise money order/check/cashier check will be fine. Local pickup and cash payment will be availble in Homestead/Maimi Area.
If I get enough commitment for this group buy. I will post the payment info in the "For Sale" section for proper THT purchase.
If you are not 100% committed to this group buy. Don't feel obligated to commit yourself. I'd need serious buyers only.
Re: Group Buy - New Mcmurdo FastFind PLB without GPS
That doesn't really strike me as the greatest deal. You can get the ACR AquaFix 406 GPS Personal EPIRB with onboard GPS for $469 from numerous websites. I think the McMurdo is still doing free battery replacements but I would much rather pay $20 more for the ACR with onboard GPS. Heck in 5 years I am sure there will be even better units out so i don't put much value in a free battery 5 years from now.

UaVaj,
I think it would be in the interest of the board as well as yourself to let us know who offered this group buy? They were certainly trying to take advantage of the members and yourself also... You also should really get one with the built in GPS they are not much more and if you need it, rescuers will not have to look for you..

Good advice on the EPIRB with built-in GPS. It's amazing to me how someone will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new boat and then try to skimp on a piece of safety equipment that can realistically save their lives. Another classic example is someone who buys one of these new SPOT devices and thinks they will be safe out in the deep blue - another classic example of someone who has no clue.
Me thinks there was no real group buy here - it was something UaVaj came up with on the spur of the moment trying to impress people that he knew what he was doing so he could save a couple of bucks on a piece of equipment. Unfortunately for him, he did not know how to do it, or where.
RE: Group Buy - New Mcmurdo FastFind PLB without GPS
Here is the reasoning. Yes is only $100 difference (no big deal) buy why WASTE a $100 on a feature I won't ever benefit from.
I read somewhere (I think it was here on THT) that the USCG don't even bother to look at the GPS coordinates. The reality is their response system can't even utilize the GPS portion of the distress signal. They are still old school 406MHz and 121MHz.
Now that it is $300 vs $550 (for the plus). I think I will definitly pass on the GPS feature. Anyone else think this sound?
Information is definitly power.
As for the vendor. Here you go. It is listed for $479 shipped. Was cheapest anywhere. Now take another $29 discount for a group buy. Great Deal rite? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/McMur...mZ140081043119
Not a great anymore. Thanks bamaboy473 for posting that overton link.

I think your reasoning for NOT getting the GPS enabled is flawed. The way I understand it from reading my ACR PLB info. THe EPIRB updates every 20 minutes with updated cooridinates to the Satelilites. I am sure when they start a rescue and as it progresses USCG personnel are updated on your position. WHile being in a liferaft or in the water speed is of importance even here in N. Florida. I think you are being foolish not getting a GPS unit, but it is your 100 bucks.
ALso I think it was a good idea for you to post the vendor, good luck on your decision.

"Flawed" is putting it nicely.
UaVaj you need to go back to reading class. The CG most definitely looks at the GPS coordinates from an activated EPIRB, and those numbers are what we use to initialize a search. Your statement: "The reality is their response system can't even utilize the GPS portion of the distress signal" is completely false as we have saved hundreds of lives to date by keying in on the lat/lon position broadcast by 406 EPIRBS.

UaVaj - 3/28/2008 Thanks for the kick in the azz. I will go and spend the extra 500 (250 per unit) for a pair of the GPS version.
Not a problem, but remember, it is best to not make statements about safety at sea when you know not about what you are talking about. And always remember: there is likely someone out there who knows more than you do . . . . . . . .
