Default Dumb trailer question? Round vs. Square Tube Axles

Hey all, new to boats but not new to doing mechanical stuff. Long story short, I get asked by my buddy to help out with mechanical stuff on his tow vehicle and trailer. He needs to replace an axle on the trailer (dual axle with leaf spring, trailer is old and a bit oversized for the boat - it was free, we don't know brand, done lots of work on it already). I had a good conversation with a fella here convincing me I'd be able to do it (and I searched the forums).

Question(s): Can I replace the square tube axles with round tube axles? Is there anything besides using the appropriate connecting hardware and getting the size right that I need to think about that would be different than replacing with a square tube axle? The issue is he is convinced that we'll need to have a custom square tube axle fabricated. Like I said, being new to boats I may be missing something OR really overthinking this - but I've seen tons of round tube axles for sale in various sizes and can't imagine we couldn't just buy one. Also, is there any advantages/disadvantages to the square tube vs. round tube axles? He's been around boats longer than me, but before I start that process of fabricating this thing I want to make sure thats what I need to do? Any help or comments would be appreciated.

As long as the weight capacity is the same the only difference would be the round bottom U-bolt to attach to the springs. The only problem with universal round axles is they are usually not galvanized and do not last as long in a salt water application.

I think you would also need to weld a pad on the top side that sits against the trailer frame.
There are plenty of co's that sell square tube axles. Click on the link to the THT sponsor "Trailer Parts Super Store", it should be displayed to the right of this post.

Thank you sir, Trailer Parts Super Store is our website. The only disadvantage to square trailer axles is that they are usually specific to manufacturer. Because they already have the spring bolt hole drilled in them before they galvanize them. A round tube axle is usually universal and doesn't have the spring seats welded to it. You are correct about needing a spring perch for the round axle. You mount the axle first and then just have someone weld the spring seat so the axle doesn't spin on you. We do offer some square axles from EZ Loader and LoadRite if the dimensions are the same you can use one of them.

That is what I've found, which made me think I was missing something.

That is what I had figured - and to be honest once I get my welder (the person) there, it may be worth while to fabricate one from scratch.

What would you do?

Does anyone know a place that sells generic (not for specific trailer brand) square tube axles? Particularly in the Chesapeake Bay area.

Curious about this trailer, it is a tandem axle which I assume is over 3000 lb capacity, how are you going to register it
if you don't know what brand it is or have prior paperwork? I would call your local DMV office to be sure you can get
a tag for this trailer before investing money in it. Some states allow a home made trailer up to a limited gross wt.
check this out first and brake requirements.

Have you taken the measurements on the existing axle and compared them to Eastern Marines offerings? Next it
may work far better to go to both new torflex axles to start with new hubs and brakes.

jenkisph - Trailer was "received" 2 years ago, long painful process, but is titled, tagged, inspected, and everything is appropriate, etc. (I wasn't involved). Did check Eastern - as noted above all square tube axles are for certain brand trailers. Torflex look cool, but my guess is they are to pricey.

I bought a square tube axle from Champion Trailers in Sildel, La. They will cut and weld them to fit your trailer. Check out there web site.

I would price both torflex and leaf spring models, also read some of the threads about leaf springs and their longevity with
salt water use. the prices on the torflex axles seem to be reasonable to me.
