Jesse, the boat was overpropped for sure. Their tests were done with 21 Tempests but they had 23 tempests on their trying to eake out top end. Top RPM on my short trip was something around 5200 or 5300. My driver told me that they did a longer run and got it to 5600rpm but clearly these are all low.
Dave, The Etecs ran quite well and I think they may actually be quieter than the 250 (new airflow design I think?). At any rate, my experience with my 250 would make it pretty hard for me to buy two, or even three, of them. Also the controls and overall smoothness of the Verado's is hard to match. I honestly dont know what I would get right now, though the Verado would rank highly based primarily on advanced controls. Yeah, everyone keeps talking about the negatives of complexity but I cannot recall reading about control failures with the Verado.
I saw 54mph and 5600RPM ~3:00 Saturady. It was a quick run with tons of traffic and no real time to play with trim.

Thanks 606 -- I understand all about being burned by a outboard vendor. I've bought 4 Mercs since 2001 and three of them were dogs. To add insult to injury, Mercury really dropped the ball on customer service. I'm sure the Verado's are great engines, but I will never buy another Mercury. My late father always told me to stay away from Mercs in salt water. In the 70's he had Johnsons and Evinrudes without any trouble -- time to go back to the future!
I have a friend who runs a pair of 225 Verados ona 27 Seasport in SE ALaska. Motors have been flawless for 1000 hours. Smoth, powerful, just awesome. ONly problems have been with the controls (I think first gen) but that seems all sorted out. I think that motor will prove (and continue to be) a winner.

I have been a Yamaha guy all my life, but get the Verados. Look closely at the fit and finish between the Yellowfin and the Sea Hunter and the SH is not even close to being in the same class as the yelowfin. The Seavee tops both of them.
Im going to be in the market for a new boat in a year or two also, and the boats I'm considering come factory rigged with Merc's, andI really want to trust them. I have been on a several Verado powered boats and love everything about them. However, I continue to see a ton of them blowing lower untis. I talke to the Merc rep at the OC show this weekend and he assured me that the newer one should not have that issue anymore. Good news I have two years to watch and see what happens
