A lot depends on where you are located. But for starters call your closest CG office and ask.

The coast guard has ,on their website, all of the renewal forms & procedures. I've always renewed myself & am in the process of renewing mine now & this time they have made it even more complicated. Typical government at work.

CG site has a complete package you can dowload as pdf's. The seatime you will need to figure out on your own. If you do not have enough, you can take an open book test that they will send you to take at your leasure. As it is an open book test, you can go back to the CG site and download the Excel file of all the questions and answers. This make a really good reference that you can search by keyword for each question and the correct answer. And most of all do not be in a hurry. 12-15 weeks is really the norm here in S. Florida.

I just did mine...you are going to need a physical, eyes/hearing, drug test ,( the Maritime Consortium, they will send you a letter good for 30 days.) You are going to need a letter in regards to sea time. Your Capts Lic. 2 FORMS OF ID , lic / passport will work. Makr sure you have everything....they will turn you away if you do not have it all.....they will take your finger prints there then they will do a back ground check on ya....then 4-6 weeks you will get your lic. in the mail. I just got mine, and I think it was 4 weeks.....it can be hit or miss when you get there...I was in and out in 45 min's...I was happy with that.....I don't know where you got yours, but where I got mine, I called them and they had a pre-packet all done, and I just picked it up and they had a check sheet on what I had to get....

I just renewed mine in Nov last year. I still have not received the license in the mail. Time to call AGAIN!!! All license goes thru West Virgina now for processing. You can renew 1 year either side of the 5 year time period. Do it sooner rather than later just in case "Murphy" gets involved. Good luck.

You do not have to go to a CG center to renew your license. Everything can be handled through the mail. Heck, the NO, LA. exam center will discourage you from coming in person. I just did my second renewal all through the mail. Took a couple of months.

I am on the phone right now with Connie A. in West Va. Like I stated earlier, this is where all the paper work must pass thru before it gets sent to the Captains. She said it was sent on Jan. 15, 08. She is checking my file and will (maybe) send a new one. She seems very sincere and is trying to help. Connie could not be nicer on the phone.

I went the early route for renewal. Did have to go to Charleston, SC to do. One thing ya need to keep in mind, that I found out when I got my renewal.....The new Date for your license is the date they actually send it out, not the 5 year date that your last license was on. In my case, I'll now have to renew next time 4 months sooner than my actual original 5 year date.. The CG calls this "license creep" so I was told. Supposedly they are aware and working on this, as they know it'll discourage early renewals, which they have been pushing in the past.

Maybe the NO office is still backed up from Katrina. I don't know of anyone on the east coast that hasn't had to go in person to the regional CG center (Baltimore, Charleston, etc.) to renew. Now 5 years ago, ya could renew by mail, but not now.

Be sure you have the required number of days sea time for renewals. First renewal may have a set days. Also you can apply earlier than the renewal date and ask them to issue on the renewal to delay the above license creep.

To check the status of your CG application online go to http://homeport.uscg.mil. Click on "Merchant Mariners" and then "Merchant Mariner Application Status".

You may also want to apply for your TWIC card while you're thinking about it. It will be a requirement in September of 08 and I'm told they are recommending that we shouldn't wait until the last minute to apply or we may be parked.

For more information... Google TWICinformation

I can not remember exactly how manydays on water and how many of these days can be inshore.
How many sea days required for renewal?
What % can be inshore?
