Default Best Bimini Top Color

Independent of personal taste factors, which is the best color choice for a bimini top in Sunbrella fabric (or polyester fabric) to serve the need to provide shade from the hot Florida sun while boating in saltwater? Which color will look the best after 5 years of use? Which color(s) seem to fade the least over time, even after repeated cleanings? Opinions from experienced boaters that have had to replace several bimini tops that wore out over time would be appreciated. From a pure aesthetics standpoint, I'm kind of partial to the Sunbrella Pacific Blue or Captain Navy colors at the moment, but I'm sure I'm not considering all the factors that should go into this decision. Will it be hotter under these colors than a lighter color in strong midday heat, or would the difference be inconsequential?

I had a navy bimini on my last boat for 2 yrs (sold the boat), it looked brand new. I think the (sunbrella) materials are high quality and hold up well, i only see realy faded one on pretty old boats.

I was hoping you'd get some feedback, I'm about to have a top built for my boat and had the same thoughts on pros and cons. I wanted to do black to match my snap-on mooring covers but was worried about the Florida heat.

I have tan canvas on my t-top. It's light enough that it doesn't get hot but dark enough that it does show dirt or stains.

I ordered a Sunbrella bimini top fabric color sample card last week, and am going to get the Admiral to choose a color. That way no matter what color she picks, it will always be the "right" one. ;-) However, I will try to steer her towards a lighter color based on 23Dorado's post.

PS 23Dorado, "Wish You Were Here" is great on so many levels.

color for T-ops is pretty much an urban myth...I have had blue, red and black....absolutely no difference in temperature underneath from any color - and I'm in south florida..the only comment I can make is the red fades slightly faster than the other colors but 303 fabric guard does a great job of retarding t-top fade....

I'm having a new white top made to replace Sunbrella dark blue, I like the blue alot, but seems much hotter underneath than the white that a friend has, even here in northern michigan the blue makes it a lot hotter.

In terms of shear durability and looking clean, the Sunbrella walnut color which is a brown with some black threads in it has held up the best in the sun in Hawaii. It outlasts the marine blue by about 20 percent. It is the only color I use for boat covers. What usually dies first is the thread that they use to sew them together I've had various color biminis and have not found any real difference in the heat. The one I hated the worst was a material called Stamoid. It got dirty instantly and would never clean up. It looked old after a week. The current bimini is black and red. Red does fade, but I keep the top closed and covered when the boat is not being used. Here it is open and the next shot is of it closed and covered. A boot to cover the top is cheap compared to replacing the top.

When I bought a bimini top for our bay boat the canvas guy tried to get us to pick black or dark blue. He said that they would do a better job of hiding the dirt/aging (obviously) and that they would be cooler than a lighter color. He said that the lighter colors let more sun through and end up being hotter. All that being said we opted for a light gray. I don't notice it being less cool than a darker color. Now we'll just see how hard it is to keep clean (it stays closed in the boot 99% of the time).

If you go with Sunbrella, the Captains Navy is really nice, and a bit of a change of pace from the Pacific Blue that EVERYBODY has. If you go with vinyl, white is the best color. In any case, for longevity in FL the sewing thread is more important than the color of Sunbrella. Specify a Goretex thread. If the shop does not know what that is, pick another shop.

I like my black top. Cover and quick release mounts allow me to store inside when not in use. 5 years old and looks brand new.
