Ok, this may sound crazy, but here goes. Has anyone been told their Yamaha Tach/hour meter shows more hours than their outboards ECM ? I just had this happen today. I bought boat new in 2005 with a yamaha f150 outboard. Had 0 hours on dash meter. Now 3 years later, boat meter shows 220 hours, but Yamaha dealer says engine has 117 hours per ECM. The ECM has never been changed. The only thing I can think of , is my boat was rigged with a Yamaha 150HDPI when i first looked at it... when I bought it, I asked dealer to switch the HDPI for a Four stroke. Maybe the tach/hour meter was supposed to be set differently for the 4 stroke?
Strange things happen. My twin F-115's were in for the 100 hr service. Gauges showed 110 hrs. I picked the boat up and the first time I ran the engines I noticed the gauges had 2 hrs. I called the dealer and they said no way. I took the boat back a few weeks later and puzzled looks and strange expressions. I've had some to tell me the gauges were changed, electrical problems and most good mechanics say they can't be tampered with. The gauges now show 124 and I know the engines have 224.
The guage clocks time when the key is turned even if the engine is not running. A common cause for the extra hours is that if for some reason you turn the key to check power or fuel a lot or forget to turn it off. Or if the guage is not original to the engine, meaning it was used on another engine before the one its hooked to now. The ECM is the one to believe.

you can also reset the service meter on a Yamaha multi function tach. press mode and it will scroll thru showing actual hours (key switch on not ecu) then press mode again and you can reset that # by pushing mode and se together. then press mode again and the hours are hidden. mode one more time brings you back to actual hours. I hope that makes sense.
It's really odd, because Idon't float around in my boat with the key on and engine off - all my electronics are direct wired, so i would not leave the key on like that. I sure will keep an eye on it and make sure I don't. I also need to keep my own time and compare to the service meter time to see if its running fast or something. Big diff between 220 and 117 hours.
I have twin hpdis My starboard motor reads half as many hours in the ecm than the port motor. My gauges read the same hours. Ecms were never replaced. Been like that for a couple years. So I dont know if would trust the ecm more than the gauge.
When the Yamaha MF tach isworking correctly, it shouldonly counts hours if it see's a pulse on the green tach wire. So.....that means if the engine is not running, the tach will not clock hours. The clock is a timer so to say, so it is possible that it can work incorrectly(like any clock could)
I have your primary ID from your last parts order on file. I checked the system and a years time went by between the timethe enginewas originally registered and when the F150 vapor recovery update wasinstalled on your engine. As part of that kit, you got installed a new engine computer. So......with that new computer thatwould mean that your hours on the ECM would have started back at zero.

Now that makes complete sense! I think I had that "hot start fix" taken care of when I took my boat in for its 100 hour service and there is almost exactly a 100 hour error difference. I didn't realize the Hot Start Fix required replacing the ECM. Well, its a relief to know my service hour meter is working properly ! Thank you Andy you are a great resource for us THTer's
