I thought I would report on a winter project. I finally was able to test it out today.
I have a center console boat without a t-top. I fish at night some, and my stern-mounted anchor light is right in my line of vision. I am also a fly fisherman so casting room is always an issue. The stern anchor light is always in the way for me since I fish from the stern often.
I wanted to make some type of anchor light socket that I could mount on the grab rail over my center console. However, I hate drilling a lot of unnecessary holes or making changes to wiring without good reason.
I got an anchor light socket (Donnie Jones at Jones Brothers sent it to me free when I wrote to ask where to get one). I then drilled out a hole in a scrap of wood, and mounted the socket in the wood block (I gave the wood two coats of polyurethane). I then attached the wood block to a plastic rail clamp (I use the same type of clamp to mount my vhf antenna).
I got some marine wire and heat shrink and attached a wire to the socket on one end. On the other end, I got a cigarette lighter style male plug from Radio Shack. I can then power the anchor light from the cigarette lighter jack in the console. No holes to drill and no permanent wiring changes. The cigarette lighter male plug has an led to show when it is powered and is even fused.
The anchor light is now well above my head when installed. It should be much better for night fishing.
Now I have a console-mounted anchor light for night fishing, but the light pole still stows under the gunwale and I did not have to alter the factory stern socket. My boat should also be more visible at night now since the light is higher and can be seen from any direction.
The whole thing probably cost me $40-$50.
I'm ready for the spring clam worm hatches!
