Yes, overwide is illegal in most states. The trick is to have a big/wide trailer under it. My experience is that you will not have a problem of being over wide unless you put your boat on a little pussy trailer. Spend the money and buy a big trailer if you are going to tow.
I can't belive how many people spend 12k on electronics and put an under rated trailer on the road. The seven mile bridge in the Keys is backed up all the time with the "Yep, it fit's guy's" Trailers.
Proportional is the key. Also never pull a big, wide boat with a little half ton truck on a narrow trailer. If you do that, It's like just putting on a sign that say's D.O.T. pull me over.
It's great to look good on the water, but it is also great to go down the road in style, presenting a look of "I know what the "F" I'm doing. Saves a lot of trouble with the LEO.
My 26 footer will ride on this. 21,000 GVW, 8 lug, torsion spring and stainless brakes on 6, "E" rated tires.
No such thing as overkill on a trailer. Those in the know, Know what I mean.
