Default Solar/Diesel/Electric hybrid trawler

I was at Trawlerfest this weekend in Stuart and spent some time talking to the Island Pilot rep about their new hybrid trawler - maybe the wave of the future if fuel costs continue to escalate?

It's a 40 foot catamaran hulled cruising boat powered by (2) 35hp electric motors, powered either from a 6kw photovoltataic array and/or a pair small deisel generators. The solar array delivers sufficent power for a 6 knot cruise using no fuel at all, and the generators supply additional or subsitiute power for a max speed of 13 knots - as fast as most traditional trawlers, with fuel efficencies averaging 14 NMPG.

They didn't have one at the show, as the prototype is just now undergoing sea trials over in China. Looks like prices will run around 500k

They also make wind powered hybrids for a lot less money.

Steering is done with the “follow-up” knob on the Raymarine autopilot. The motors are controlled with a pair of electronic shifter/throttles. An LCD from Ossa Powerlite handles the drive-train modes. There is plenty of counter space for charts.

Hmmm......not so sure about that one...Should make for some fun in tight quarters....
