Default Yamaha 150 - 4 stroke vs Mercury 115 - 4 stroke

Any input on these 2 engines? The 2 boats I am looking at have these. Whaler 190 Montauk with Mercury 115 - 4 stroke with 5 year warranty and Maycraft 2000CC 150 Yamaha - 4 stroke with 6 year warranty. Whaler great boat but engine?

Thanks,

AK

AK, The Merc 115 has a Yamaha power head, that engine (in Yamaha paint) has been solid but some of them had issues with 'making oil'. Do a search on it here and you'll find it. The F150 may be one of Yamahas best motors, never hear anything bad about them and they are more than 150hp, closer to 170..

No. The Merc 115 4-stroke offered on the Montauk 190 does not have a Yamaha power head. It's built on the Verado 4 cylinder block.

Both motors will do fine but the Whaler rig may have better resale value down the road.

Both engines are solid with neither being necesarily "better". The current Merc 115 4-strokes have a shorter track record since they have been out for only 2 years. They seem every bit as reliable as the YamaMerc design they replaced. Many people report a tad more power and speed with the new engine.

None of us can really give you an informed and complete answer unless we know what you're going to use the boat for.

Did that start with the '08 motors?

I think they came out about the same time as the Montauk 190 ('06 or '07). Don't think the Montauk 190 was ever offered with the Yama-Merc 115.
