Default topics for discussion

I am scheduled for a few speaking engagements in the near future. I do these all the time for Power Squadrons, cruise clubs, yacht clubs etc. Anyway I'm out of ideas and I've done these venues before so I cant pull something out of the can.

Hurricane prep has been beat to death.
Corrosion is also pretty worn out.

If you were attending, what would you like a surveyor to talk about?

Modern building techniques, maybe?

(e.g. single skin v. laminates, thick v. thin skins, polyester v. epoxy v. vinylester, fiberglass v. carbon fiber v. kevlar, hand laid v. spray gun, vacuum molding, paint v. thru-coloured gel coat, custom v. factory built, etc.).

I'd be interested in a thorough perspective on this from a qualified surveyor - ref. Pascoe's success over the years.

Importance and how-to for sealing all crevices and screw holes to prevent water intrusion, including existing screw / bolt holes by removing and reapplying with proper sealants. A lot of what we want a surveyor to determine is moisture / water in the boat / hull, so prevention of it would seem like a natural fit.

Several most common maint. lapses that cause serious $$$$$$$$ problems later...based upon your survey experience...kinda like "pay now $ or pay me later $$$$$$...just a thought.

That's pretty good. Do you know how uncommon it is to find a bait well sealed to the upper deck edge? I also have suffered a recent rash of deteriorated stringers as of late from fasteners and open limber holes.

On construction techniques I'm afraid I might loose the room pretty fast but I'm still considering an over-view.

Keep them coming.

Guaranteed to keep the crowd awake. Combine w/ Drifters thought and add some HUMOR. Now, "IF" you'd only done "THIS" you could afford more GAS!

I like Evernic's idea, as well as Drfiters. Some other ideas

Electrical systems and maintenance

Fully cored hulls versus non fully cored hulls

Common overlooked systems issues - ie. inadequate bilge pumps, etc

pros/cons of wood being used in construction

What to look for in hiring a surveyor

I recently scheduled a local surveyor as a speaker for my USPS Squadron. He shared his presentation with a marine insurance specialist and they kind of played off each other. It turned out to be one of the best speakers we've had in several years and I know that both got business from the members.

How about 4-stroke vs. 2-stroke Outboards. Pros and cons of each. Maybe E-Tec Vs. Yamaha 4-stroke. There always seems to be a passionate debate on this forum about once a week. Plenty of info here.

Surveyor's liability (or not) for issues not uncovered.

CO Safety - (not the coast guard pack) but CO issues (tailgate effect, wake-surfing, generators (gas and diesel), need for well placed monitors, etc.

pros and cons of a full bonding system (from what I can gather 50% feel it is valuable, 50% beliveve it increases risk).

How about how to "properly prep a boat for sale". I dont mean for you to give advice on how to hide problems but the small things somone can do to make your survey list shorter. (I guess I'm brainwashed with all the "flip this house" shows on TV...)
